Hi
This is our first sail across the Biscay heading for a few years sailing in the Med. We have a large old traditional MFV and after speaking to several experienced sailors began to worry about finding a winter berth. I phoned several marinas and have booked into Rota, can anyone give us any information about the marina from personal experiences. We have a teenage daughter (17) is there any night life or sporting things for her to do? Any info would be great.
Cheers

Not much in the way of night life during the winter, but I'm sure she will find what there is. From memory the marina is K and the showers etc were ok, but it was a while ago I was there. I would have thought Cadiz would have been a better bet for overwinter. There is the US naval base there, so there must be some life in and around Rota.

Hi
Thanks for the reply excuse my ignorance but what is K? We tried three of the marinas in Cadiz, 1 was full, 1 couldn't accomodate our boat and the other was about twice the price so Rota seemed our best solution at the time. As I said earlier we are very new to this and very ignorant although we lived on the boat for a couple of years in the UK, this is the furthest we've been on her so any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Cheers

sorry I meant OK, the marina is OK. The town is a little dead at anytime. I dont know the prices around there, as I stayed in Gib and Lagos, so not sure I just used Rota as a stopover a few times.

Finding berths to winter in afloat in the Med is normally much easier than in the summer - A little further from Cadiz - Gibraltar can anchor off the runway and perhaps get a 2nd dinghy with the saving or there are 3 marinas to choose from, Estapona has big social life but is a distance from the town - Almerima should have spaces -very good in terms of cafe/restaurant/social life but a good busride away from the real town....

Rota is a nice clean town but you could be bored there for six months.
Suggest you go back to Portimao or Lagos or on to Gibraltar.

Gibs actually only got two marina facilities at this time with Sheppards undergoing lots of work.....that might mean the other two have to cope with the overflow so worth a call ahead.

Please have a look at:

Unfortunately the text is in French but all photos are also in English :0)

Rota is a charming little town with everything availaible.. the marina is close to the city center (5 minutes walk) and the marina has all confort: WC, showers.. and is very safe, every pontoons are closed and you need a magnetic card to enter.

I'm not specialised in "night life" and in winter, the "social life" is quiter than in summer.. but there are several bars and the little town is quite alive..

I have spent one month there and I can recommend it..

Hi folks
Thanks for your replies, we have now arrived in Rota, and have found it to be a very pretty town with everything we need available locally. As said the marina has very good facilities and the staff are very friendly.
Cheers
Christine
