Hi all I am at present in the Baltic and would appreciate any advice on wintering places from Germany to Holland. (either afloat or on hard) I am a bit concerned about wintering in around Finland, Sweden as the sea freezes. Any web sites of marinas etc and or prices would be most appreciated.

True, but

find a spot without any commercial shipping and the boat will be fine. Heerenleed has been in the ice many times, without any problem or damage.

So, ercildoune, tell me where you would prefer to be. I am in the S of the Netherlands and could point out a number of spots, in or out of the water.. No big deal, really, and prices are not very high for a winter spot, usually from mid november till mid april.

cheers

There are still quite a few boats in the water all winter in Sweden, looks like some live aboards. I havn't done it myself but once you are there I'm sure you could ask a local. There was a yacht moored in Kasseberga most of last winter, that looked a little exposed.

I spent 2 winters in Norway living aboard and stayed afloat. The marina i used was at the top of OSLO Fjord and pumped compressed air into hoses on the bottom this set up water movement and one winter fro a week or so I was able to park my car on the ice in the finger berth opposite the boat remained afloat in it's own jboat shaped hole and was kept relativly warm by the 4 deg. sea water compared to the -30 or so air temp.

Don't know about recent prices but they do the same in Sweeden and Finland. It rarely freezes in Denmark.

Ask the locals - they were very friendly when i was there (92 -95) and will happily give advice.

Also they showed me that I I keep the boat temp just above the outside temp in Winter and arrange to move air through the boat it keeps the inside very dry. The boat itself becomes a de-humidifier. Great if you are leaving it there.

Thanks to all for the useful info. At present I am in Turku, Finland, so I will ask around. Very interesting about the temp change inside and outside. I presume they have some form of heating element or light bulb to keep the inside temp just above the outside.
They use the water movement method to create dip diving holes for the sauna and it would indeed be ideal to keep the water from freezing around a boat. Holland sounds interesting and I have spent some time in Calais marina in the winter of 2000 and agree with you that it is a good wintering place. I just have to make up my mind how long I want to stay in this area.
Prices here vary but are approx €1,000 from Oct to May (8months) including lift out and in. Too long in one place when there is so much to explore and so little time in which to do it.
Thanks again to all, I think you have helped me make a decision. I just have to convince the captain when she gets back from shopping.
Safe sailing

Just wintered in Greifswald. Would recommend there and also look at Stralsund. Winters significantly warmer than Scandinavia, and being former Eastern Germany, prices are low, and, being Germany, facilities are excellent.

If you are in Turku, there are a couple of choices just south of there, and one in Uusikaupunki. There are hundreds of options in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. The best bet is to get the 'Baltic Layup Guide' from the CA. Its got all the info you're likely to need.
