We are considering spending winter '05 in Malta and would appreciate information from anyone who has experience of this. The RYA ´Foreign Cruising' Part 2 doesn't seem to suggest time limits to stays in Malta (we are liveaboards and would need to allow a stay of up to 8 or even 9 months for contingencies). Does anyone know what the regs are for EU nationals to stay on Malta?

Does anyone know the best place to stay afloat during the winter on Malta and do they have any indication of prices and availability/booking, and the option to do our own antifouling etc? The Pilot book suggests that there is only one safe part of the main harbour that is sufficiently sheltered from the Gregale, and that this section has only 600 berths. Any recent information, based on experience, would be welcome.

Thanks,

Merlin

Silema, just a tiny bit north of Grand harbour, has an excellent well run marina and is totally sheltered - Very well run place and good to winter in with other liveaboards - there are also some cheaper inexpensive moorings - anchorages or were when I was there a while ago.

Manoel ship yard is probably the safest place in the Med to haul and leave ashore. Inexpensive and superb security. You can only work on your boat yourself if they do one job (big work force too little work) but are very flexible. They are also very, very slow but cheap. Just talk to the manager -

If you want something much, much cheaper then Tunisia with Monistir and Sousse is not far. Both have very modern marinas and are secure and very inexpensive. Possible to 'cheat' the system with charter flights in and out - a liveaboard there will tell you how. I know people who left their boat there for 2 years whilst they went off to crew on a circumnavigation....

Have a look at my website - link below. You will find a lot of information on Malta there. If some of it looks similar to the information in the RYA booklet there is a simple explanation - I wrote that on behalf of the CA.
