What would you recommend for treating the internal timber in the saloon and cabins with to prevent or protect from the 'mould' that can come with the cold and reduced usage at this time of year.
Any info on Scandinavian oil for preventing mould.
Thanks for your thoughts and experience on this.

You don't say what finish you have on the wood. If it is varnished then a wipe over with Polycell Mould Preventer (?) can help, if it is oiled then it may not work and may even spoil the surface. The only way to prevent mould is ventilation, although that can be difficult at this time of year, plenty of breeze though. The old advice is to lift all the floors and leave all lockers open, stand cushions up so they don't trap moisture underneath or preferrably take them home to a nice warm, dry spare room. Most helpful is to wash all the woodwork with warm soapy water and rinse off to remove salt deposits which will attract and retain moisture.

Not sure what you mean by "Scandinavian oil". Id you mean a non drying oil like teak oil rather than an oil varnish then I'd be afraid that it might increase the likelyhood of mould growth.

As a chemical means of preventing mould I think I would go along with the above suggestion and use a mould treatment containing benzalkonium chloride, such as Polycell 3 in 1 mould killer.

However controlling humidity by ventilation and perhaps a little heating is the real key to preventing it.

Fresh air, and plenty of it, works on my boat.
