Hi Guys

We are thinking of going home for the winter, as funds are getting quite low. and we need to buy some new toys for the boat

Just wondered if anybody has a recommdation for a safe cheap place to store our tub over the winter period? some where that does not insist on doing all the work would be good too.

We have tried searching but are not having much luck, plus you can't beat other peoples experiences.

Many Thanks

Darren and Vicki

Sorry if it takes a while for us to respond as Greek WIFI is a bit like rocking horse s~~t /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I've not heard of anyone laying-up in that area? I know yard-space in/around Barcelona's scarce so that will be expensive for more than a few days and the marinas both to the north and across in the Balearics are ludicrously expensive and from memory without decent yards attached.

The one place I remember seeing a decent sized boatyard was in the N of the Golfo de Rosas (somewhere west of Rosas town, say at about 42.15N 03.08W - we were on a bus when I saw it, so guessing a bit) though I've no idea of cost or availability.

Why not cross the Golfe de Lione and use the either Port Napoleon/Port Louis Yards at the bottom of the Rhone or go up the river near Cap D'Agde; all are well recommended and within 150M of Barcelona.

Vilanova il Geltrui is the place for you!! A bit down the coast from barcelona, below sitges, but not far and cheapish. I will try and get the phone number for you, B has it on the boat in Barce, but I'm offshore.

You may be thinking of St Margarida, it's between Rosas and Empuriabrava. Large Volvo agent there and some boat yards.

Hi,

I remember two particular places that were quite cheap for lifting out and also were safe and secure. Ginesta was one of these (good bus connection to the airport in Barca) and the other was north of Barca called Puerto Balis.
Only thing in Ginesta is to watch for over spray on the hard standing. When I was there it was full of maniacs spraying topsides without any protection. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There are plenty of spaces in Sant Carles Marina for this winter and Angeles the port captain tells me they can make you a very good offer.

All the berths now have water and electricity but the onshore facilities are ongoing. Hopefully there will be HOT showers by October and even cubicles for those of a shy disposition.

Security is now excellent with night patrols and good lighting on the pontoons.

Tell me more about St Carles, we are 17 meters do they cater for us? What are the prices like, summer and winter? Do they have summer room? The town I used to know, working offshore but not these days, maybe need to drive doen and have a look at the place. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Englander,

There are berths of all sizes up to 30 Mts available for rent and plenty of room, so a space for your size would be no problem, though you do fall between 2 sizes of 15 and 20 Mtrs. There is a choice between finger posts and stern to with a pick-up line from the quay for the bow.

Sant Carles de la Ràpita is a traditional Spanish seaside town with few foreign tourists and comparatively quiet in the high season apart from their fiesta week in late July.

Certainly a visit would be worthwhile, as I am sure you could negotiate a decent rate with either Neil Salter, the director, or Angeles who is a yachtie herself and is planning a second atlantic crossing at the end of the year. I have not seen a figure for cost of an annual mooring for your size of boat, but I am sure it would be competitive as there are plenty of places to fill. They completed phase 2 of the pontoons in July which had been planned for later and so far there are few boats over 12 Mtrs, although more are due in in the autumn.

The webcam http://80.175.158.237:85/ is currently showing the 8 to 10 metre berths, but it changes quite often.
