Having just picked up on the :lounge post regarding meet-ups, it's been a while since WE had one (Scuttlebutt). It doesn't HAVE to involve weekend trips to the IOW/Cherbourg/Poole. How about a quiet pub somewhere reasonably central.....

London then. But why a quiet pub? If we are to have a night out let's go somewhere with some life, the last thing one wants is some typical bloody Wetherspoons with its little huddle of mangy old Brexiteers smelling of wee.

So I've been checking that out -

Centre-point of UK land area is middle of Morecambe Bay, which has no pubs.

Assuming no-one will bother coming from the isles, we could take centre of GB mainland - Whalley, near Blackburn, Lancs, which is notorious for holes.

Centre of GB population, rather than area, is identified as just south of Derby. But that is a rather long way from the sea, and so probably has very low local concentration of Scuttlebutters.

Burton on Trent is just south of Derby and is home to many fine Breweries so seems to be an excellent location.

I recall seeing just one Scuttlebutt member citing the town as his location.

The north Wales group used to meet socially over winter and it was always a good night out. In the “Searush” days for those who remember Steve. We once talked about going to the Curry Mile in Manchester but it was voted down as being inappropriate for wives and partners (they didn’t fancy having their shoes stuck to the floor ).

It’s always nice to put faces to posters. Real persona almost always better behaved than their alter egos on here.

Who knows a rough geographical distribution of regular forumites? I am aware of a large South Coast contingent, an E Coast contingent, a few Westies and a few in Scotland.

Given that this is a sailing and not a flying forum, it seems silly to convene on a physical C of G as probably most of us would find travel to the physical centre of the country impractical.

However unboaty and uncool London may be, don't our country's fat travel arteries to London make that the obvious place to minimise disruption to most - and so to maximise turnout? No, I do not live or work there.

If a Southampton or Chichester venue were chosen, tens of members would gather without having to drive for hours (but those who had, would be welcome).

As to "quiet little pub", it would only be that way until the Scuttlers arrive.

Chichester is famously difficult to get to for anyone who doesn’t live in, er, Chichester. Portsmouth, being at one end of the Solent, is as inconvenient for forumites further west as Lymington is for those from Portsmouth and further East. Soton is also on main routes to elsewhere - always accepting that it’s at the South end of our land.

There's the 'Spoons and the Cricketers in Eastleigh, handy for the Aiport junctions on the M27/M3. The Cricketer's Arms is located at 232 Chestnut Ave, strictly "Chandler's Ford" but t's still handy for anyone travelling E,W or S, not to mention those actual in Southampton.

You can do a lot worse than a curry down Brick Lane, although with the disappearance of the London Boat Show perhaps fewer forumites will be headed that way.

I do recall a very memorable meeting in the Navy Club a few years back (TBH rather more than a few now - how time flies)

Harder to get to from the station, although I am sure that locals (like me) could offer lifts from Eastleigh, Southampton Parkway or Southampton Centre. Less accommodation locally, although Royal Southern does have rooms and a very good breakfast

I like the sound of the Old Customs House - just a short hover away for me during the week. If it's a weekend though (and I suspect for a lot of others too) then London sounds good. I remember a particularly good Brick Lane pub and curry meet a few years ago.
