I'm one of those strange people who enjoys winter maintenance, especially if it's an improvement to the old girl (boat, that is). This year though I've nothing special planned' cos the summer's activities were so curtailed by weather that we didn't really get to use last years stuff very much. (Solar panel and new manual anchor winch). So I'm soon going to be a bit bored.
What do other forumites have in mind for the 'out of water' months? Any good ideas?
 
Try to fix the various small deck leaks that make themselves known after a hard beat to windward.

Finish off the new cabin table - knocked up in a bit of a rush ready for the spring cruise, and still has a bit of stick instead of a leg.

Do something about the stereo and tidy up its dangling wiring (including refitting the ceiling strips that have been left off all season).

Fit a proper socket for the plotter instead of plugging it into the spotlight socket - was a bit tricky on the way in to Cherbourg when I realised I wanted both at once!

Fit the AIS (including wiring it to the above socket) instead of hoisting it up a signal halyard with the wire running along the deck.

Replace the heads pump with a twist&lock one.

Grease heads seacocks.

Inspect the varnish on the masts and spars, and possibly add a maintenance coat (they got three to five last winter depending on condition, so should just need topping up).

Make a MOB-hoisting strop.

Seal the wiring channel that allows leaks from the sink to run into the emergency-gear locker.

Hmm, that ought to keep me busy. Hadn't written it all down before...

Well if you're going te bored I have a good sized jobs list you can help with!

1) New electical cabinet
2) Change full length companionway doors to half height and fit wasboards.
3) Replace chainplates.
4) Repaint hull
5) Rarnish work
Etc
etc
etc.....:(
 
All thirsty work

New extended ring main going in as i write-which means relining st side lockers /conduit/opening up a couple of hidden extra storage pockets..rest of boat got the similar full monty treatment last year, might as well have 12v outlet forward for bunkside phone outlet at the same time,...ooh days!

Cockpit enclosure/proper bimini quoted and ordered.

Er can't remember rest without reference to the Book of Lists but is that enough for now to build up the winters:p beer token credit stock?

Sorry! Too far away! Otherwise I'd be there like a shot..............maybe. What's the onboard drinks cabinet like
 
I suspect a slight discombooberation withgin the mystical workings of the avatar (venerable Bukhk DV20) which currently emits steam in sizeable quantities from the exhaust, so ?top end/gasket/exhaust? Its a bit like trying to figure the workings of a elephant, an old one. With bowel trouble. Should occupy many a cold sunday
 
On a 23 year old boat, I have the legacy wiring from I suspect 2 old wind/depth/ Log systems, so that's going to be sorted.

Revamp of electric panel.

Might fit new fridge compressor. (Peltier cooler not ideal)

Do some radical things with alternator charging and switching.

That'll do, as no doubt other things will appear as if by magic.
 
Frankly, the list is endless. New regulator for the alternator, service heads (X2), abrade Coppercoat, replace heads seacocks and through hull fittings, replace large parts of the running rigging (those bits that didn't get done last year), service winches, make new bimini frame and cover. And every time I think I'm getting near to the end of the list, SWMBO will appear with something else that's broken or worn out or 'wouldn't it be a good idea if we had ....' Then I put the top washboard in the wrong way round in a thunderstorm and smash it with the hatch cover......
Don't get me going. Enough. I'm off to the bar to stop myself thinking about it all anymore.
 
I notice rewiring electrics seems a common source of irritation and refit concerns, myself included; maybe a sad comment on modern sailing, or a more important issue than old berks like me ever imagined ?!
 
Yup. There's something marina-esque about adding electric sockets. But the alternative, all those extension cords..well thats my excuse.

Can still ( and do) sail without electricery switched on. I reckon the rot set in when they stopped making hand start marine engines
 
Windlass platform ( move windlass forward 250mm )
New forestay and cap shrouds perhaps a new furler ( ouch )
New radar mast on the aft quarter with sea me transponder atop the radome
Sides and mozzie nets for the cockpit tent
Install fuel 'polisher' ( An electric pump and water separator & filter independent of the main system )
New mattresses
Bracket for the rail BBQ
New 1kg fire extinguishers in each of the cabins
Heli coil into one of the studs in the engine morse control
Bilge pump control panel and secondary high alarm
Fridge control circuit tweak ( adjust the engine running detection circuit that lowers the setpoint when the engine is on )
Edge laminate on 5 doors.

So a quiet winter :)

Old Bukhs steam and the last one I knew that someone tried to "cure" steamed the same after as before. Does it start easily, does it produce power, is water coming out the exhaust? If the answers are yes to all, my advice would be to leave it alone. If you are really paranoid about the steam get a temperature sensor and map the engine for hot spots.
 
Starts fine, runs fine if a little low on power. The steam I don't mind, its just that it draws attention to the boat and the fairly obvious lack of engineering skills! It is '81 vintage so I suppose I shouldn't grumble
