Winter project secured, opinions please?

Ooh now what a nice project. Great engine and a highly decent boat imho. Good spec - electric windlass, nice radar arch, etc. I went to the Relcraft moulding factory yonks ago, aged 17, to collect a custom boat hull the same factory made for us - me and my dad. It wasn't a Relcraft hull; it was a centre console dory, but moulded by the same guys in the same Nottingham factory. TThey were a good team and knew well how to mould, and got a nice balance between strong enough but not stupidly heavy imho. We checked out lots before commissioning them and they passed my random quality standards back then :-)

The flybridge only works on a few boats this size, but this is one of them. The beautiful Berties are perhaps the best at getting a flybr to look fab on a small boat, but this one looks very alright too imho.

On your specifics:
1. I'd keep the stripe/ a stripe to lower the apparent height of the fly. Maybe not blue though and maybe a bit thinner Perhaps black or dark grey or something. You can just paint this in epoxy I think.
2. Yup those rails were ugly. If they happen to be 1m from the deck the thing was probably coded earller in its life. Anyway, lower rails would be nicer for sure. Loads of s/s workshops can make these, as you know (Or maybe you weld ss?). I can't tell just from pictures, but consider using 30mm tube not 25mm, or 30m oval laid flat onto round vertical posts. Can add a quality feel
3. A mid rail at the pulpit would be nice too
4. Personally i think the windows are ok and I wouldn't rip them out and redo the GRP. Lots of pain for no gain. Perhaps think about the italian trick of painting the mullions and nearby GRP black to change the look and shape of the window lines. Also paint the silver stripe bit of the window rubber black. Perhaps do the A pillars black but leave the central split windscreen mullion white. Play around with MS Paint to model ideas here...

Good luck and post pics when you get the chance

Thanks to all for the positive feedback so far....really looking forward to getting stuck into it!

Have a black and grey colour scheme for the exterior in mind, black a/f, black window mod's as suggested, grey stripe inplace of the blue at waterline and a grey stripe/band to break up the fb slab sidedness! replace all skin fittings with stainless, remove horn, vhf ariel, nav lights and other fittings from exterior of f/b and relocate! Oh and replace the perspex wind deflector on fb with a smoked grey colour..
Hoping to achieve a very clean uncluttered look, infact the Bertie MK put up has that look nailed IMHO.
Regarding all fixtures fittings etc I'll be keeping a close eye on fleebay in the hope of picking up some winter bargains, this thought in mind...if any of you have any items lying around in your store/lockup/garage that are gathering dust and you feel they could benefit this project then please offer them up as I'd be more than happy to purchase if suitable......
Keep the ideas suggestions coming and I intend to start a new refurb thread as soon as I get my hands on "Orca II" oooh excited...:) ;);)

Nice project indeed!!

I'd try to refurbish doors first and see what the condition of the wood is, then make a decision..

BTW, on the colour scheme, here's a picture of Navigator with the black around the windows (typical Italian of that era), and small stripe carried backwards along the superstructure ... and small black stripe aft back of FB....also the top part of FB and SS radar arch is painted black... Black AF and black stripe ... a bit monochrome perhaps, but I think it suits her..

What did you use to paint the Radar Arch Alf? It looks great.

Congratulation on your new purchase, I also spotted the Relcraft for sale and although not looking for a new boat thought this a bargain for someone.
I wonder whether it would be possible to fit an inside helm position for bad weather days whilst you are refurbishing the boat, im sure there should be some further info archived online as these were built without a flybridge.
Look forward to some updates.

Best Wishes Geoff

Thanks Geoff,
Have considered the option but discounted it due to wanting to maximixe the useable space in what is already not one of the biggest cabins...
Being more of a fair weather boater/fisherman and having experience with f/b boats I'm content with sticking to its current layout.
Busy at the moment learning to use the paint option on photo's trying to work out a suitable colour scheme as stated previous (can't get the hang of it though! :( )
Boat not arriving in Wales until next week but I will start a new thread when I start the refurb.
Cheers,Rob :).

My first attempt at playing around with the paint function! (ok ok i'm learning lol)
Before and after shots here, the grey and black additions are what I'm thinking for the colour scheme, together with replacing the f/b perspex screens to a dark smoke colour......
Well what you reckon?
I think it makes a massive difference! ;)

Windows and fly screen look good; for me, the two-tone stripe doesn't work. Looks too heavy.

Cheers

Outside scheme is a few months off yet, was just having a play and trying to guage opinions.....
Think I'll end up with quite a few attempts before making a decision, well that is unless someone comes up with a superb scheme :) :)

" I have an AQA41A in my boat, and I too bought it for the engine. Its a truck engine with huge tourque."

41A......Its a good tough old engine but doubt its been anywhere near anything with a set of wheels in its life :)

Photoshopped (badly hehe) to try and give a representation of how it would look with the f/b taken back to white, and the window trick jfm suggested!...........Slab sided or not slab sided this is the question...??

Now take what you have and "paint" the top part (just below handrails and up to torpedo screen... ) black... that will draw the top down towards the now black windows...
