As a humorous aside, here is Tilman on the theme:

".....an ex journalist...he became suspect to Brian owing to a confessed inability to eat sardine spines and the possession of a yachting cap, and to me on account of his unseamanlike habit of wearing gloves on the night watch even....in the Atlantic."

I have some Seaskinz mitts, and think they're great. Served me well on a single handed trip Lymington to Harwich in January/February (ice on the decks, etc.), and I feel the cold quite badly. Would be better if they had a longer, gauntlet, type cuff to keep out the draughts/wet. If your hands are damp try putting a pair of silk gloves on first to hep them slide into the mitts.

Another possibility is electrically heated gloves. I bought some for the First Mate, who has Reynaud's. The particular ones I bought were motorcycle gloves, and they can be powered by either plugging into an external 12v supply, or from a recharchable battery carried in the gaunlet type cuff. She's found them good on cold walks, but now simply avoids coming on the boat when it's very cold!

I have a pair of Sealskinz's not to expensive, really good, waterproof etc, find them on Amason, got mine from blacks. Elastic aged wrist band, Velcro adjustable gauntlet type wrist band, special tips to thumb and index finger for finger touch using tablet etc.

A pair of old fashioned woollen gloves inside some B&Q brown waterproof Cotten lined builders gloves, about £1.99 a pair, work really well for me.

The builders gloves are so cheap always have 2/3 pairs on board.

For similar situations in the past I've found motorbike gauntlets very good. The leather provides a good grip and I find I can do fiddly jobs well enough.

For really wet situations then non-waterproof fibrepile and pertex mittens are great. Grip isn't good but the water runs through and they can be wrung out to provide instant warmth.

Another vote for cycling gloves.A pair of endura gloves with long cuffs are eccellent wet or dry.

I have also tried sealskinz and found them great in the dry but cold and difficult to put on when wet.
