This is what I love about winter boating, my first cod of 2017 on the mighty Mersey and a personal best.

Nice fish! It looks as if we're going to have another Cod-free year in the south east, nice to get a reminder of what they look like!
 
Nice fish. When I fished off the beach at Crosby in my youth (too many moons ago) the best we could hope for was a small flatty or a pesky eel. It's good to see the estuary is much cleaner now.

The Mersey is now rich in marine life and gets better every year. Salmon run up now, sea trout have been caught this summer and the range of species is fantastic for anglers.
 
Forgive my utter ignorance of sea fishing but do you throw them back or take them home and eat them?

If you do eat them, how many portions from a fish that size?
