Following on from the biscay on a budget thread, which was going very well until disaster struck and I got offered a couple of months work abroad. :)

So now the boat needs a home in the next couple of weeks for a few months, currently in Brighton but heading west.

Dartmouth looked interesting, website said no but I just emailed them.

Suggestions? Pontoon would be nice but mooring OK I suppose.

TIA as always :)

A lot of Portsmouth boats get winter deals in Southsea Marina or Porto Solente.
AIUI Cowes/Medina can be cheap, but loses appeal if you intend to visit often.

Hayling Yacht Co,

Chichester harbour; moorings and pontoons - think both would be available over winter, I kept a 5' draught fin keeler on both options, on the mooring the lower 1' of keel dug in at LWS, on a pontoon she sank in to the waterline in the soft mud. Sorry lost their no.

Also Wilsons yard nearby - probably more restricted re size & draught. 02392 464869

Same sort of thing at Thornham ' marina ' which is putting it a bit nicer than it is, gaggle of muddy pontoons but very good for lift in & out & storage ashore, keenly priced. 01243 375335

Maybe Emsworth marina - lovely spot as long as you can get over the sill at HW's. 01243 377727

You could ask Chichester Conservancy 01243 512301 BUT ask about car parking & tender storage - often not available with their moorings.

Dart Nav will find you somewhere, but there almost certainly won't be water or power, or walkashore. If you need those, then try Darthaven. Or give Dolphin boatyard at Galmpton a ring, ask for Scot, they might have something, and it will be cheap!
Train from Kingswear won't be running that regularly during the winter months.

Dolphin boatyard at Galmpton, is a possible but you would need to be able to take the ground (Mud) each tide, or at least it was when I was in Galmpton a while back.

No train to Dartmouth I'm afraid. limited winter train up till New Year ( Dart Valley Steam Train) from Kingswear, Dartmouth buses to Torbay via Totnes ( Stagecoach Gold bus) , and buses from Dartmouth to Exeter ( Stagecoach X46 ).

Dart Valley Steam Train winter timetable link http://www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk/timetables/train

Don't think they run from January until Easter?

Not sure if Noss Marina do winter berths or moorings , but it could be difficult to get anywhere from there without a car .

Kingswear pontoons have water and electricity. Yacht taxi runs all year. £1 a trip if you buy 20 tickets in advance.
Still tempted by darthaven, only 180 a month plus vat. Though the harbour dues are another couple of hundred. Still, looks like an OK place the hang around for a bit after a couple of months working away.

At Darthaven you'll also have to provide your own electricity metering device- costs around £80 I think. The bus stops just outside the marina that takes you to Paignton from where you can get the mainline train. It works very well. If you book the train ticket on line you can add the bus ticket at a nominal cost- £2 I think which is a good saving. Ferry across to Dartmouth and then you can access the bus to Plymouth- probably one of the finest bust trips in the South west. The route takes you along much of the coast line- big respect to the drivers as they negotiate the tight bends and tiny lanes.

There are a handful of over-wintering cruisers at Darthaven, surprised there are not more, last two years the place has been far from full. Dartmouth is a great place to stay with all the facilities you could ever want: good library with fast free internet ( wifi in the marina is sh*t), arts centre that shows latest movies, even a Lidl's at the top of the town!
Make sure you insist that the harbour dues cover a full year if you are paying full price. We had a massive row with the harbourmaster over that. Tried to charge full whack for 5 months stay! We won in the end but had to be pretty aggressive......
