Dear users! Can anybody help me out with a scan or link to the article in Motorboat Monthly (I think from the early 2000s) about the Windy 37 Grand Mistral, where it was choosed as the best sea going boat ever driven? Also, is anyboy here who can give me a feedback about how the Hardtop feels in hot summers above 32 degrees? Many many thanks for your help!!

Aged outdrives.
Green house in 32 degrees .

MB monthly...have not driven a Magnum , Otam , AB or Itama i can only conclude by 2000 ?
None of ^^^ on outdrives all have straight shafts with the engines placed centrally, for balance .
The CoG needs to be as close as possible to the CoL ......just can’t do that with outdrives ....if sea keeping is in the “ dock “

Thank you Portofino! As I am not a native english speaker, can you please help me to understand your post? Why do you say „aged outdrives“? Is this your general opinion, that outdrives are aged? Green house: did you experience that by yourself? Other users told me it is 3 degrees less compared to a canope/bimini. Last but not least, I am looking for the article of MB monthly about the Windy 37 Grand Mistral. Can you help me in this? Thanks a lot!

“ aged outdrives “ was referring to comparable maintenance issues as the Windy 37 is now a old boat .
Yes I have sat in hard topped boats in the Med , even with the roof open the glass ( “ green house “ ) effect multiplies the heat .
Thats fine a lower temps in fact desirable....but you said “ 32 “ so I answered your question .
An open bimimi allows more breeze in if any , or more hot air out in my experience.

No I can’t ,help sourcing the mag article ...suggest approach them ?

It is simple to understand any Portofino post. His Itama is better than any boat that ever sailed the seas. Period :D

I have an archive of old MBM magazines. Can you be more specific about the date of the test? If so I can try to find it, scan it and email it to you

Ah, I see...?

I read somewhere in a scandinavian boat forum about this MBM article. I will try to find the post and come back to you. Thank you very, very much in advance!!

Not necessarily, but they are cool in the Med .
As you get bigger the glass area increases, you can tint it or cover it externally, or do this ....It’s a sufficient issue , the solar glazing in hard tops for them to seek solutions.

Just to be clear, the Windy 37 and similar don’t have glass roofs. Im am talking about GFK-roofs. Does that change something?

We have a windy 37 grand mistral but not the hard top version, so cant really comment on whether it gets too hot.

We've had it since new in 2007 - In terms of how it is to drive, it is a very good drive (but I havent driven an itama, magnum etc so I may not have the full picture ;-) ), it goes very well though , runs very level/flat .

We have the version with the D4 260 hp engines, they give it a top speed of around 35 knots . The engines have been ok, suffering from the usual volvo penta D series issues over the years but nothing major . Same goes for the outdrives.

No issues with the boat/hull.

Got a windy 25 mirage as well ...... with the same D4 260 hp engine and drive - same volvo penta issues.

Always thought the Windy boats were slow for the power,
My 1999 Hunton 36 had KAD 44's twin 260HP and topped out at 48 knots . would cruise easily at 35- 40 knots
When boat was being taken to Poole for its new owner the boat broker helmed it there as owner was not available, He had obviously driven a variety of boats but said to Martin Payne that it had the best handling / sea keeping of any boat he had ever driven,

I think its quite a heavy boat relative to a hunton, there's no way ours would do 48 knots with 520hp, could probably get a few knots more out of it with no gear, little fuel, no water etc, maybe you could hit 40 knots with it?

Hello Deleted User! I found it. They say it was MBM June 2005. The Author was Steve Curtis. I would be so thankful if you can help me in this!

I have been fortunate to have driven most models of Windy and just about everything else Scandinavian, both commisssioning and delivery of new boats right up to the Xanthos 52. As well as Princess, Fairline, Sealine and Bavaria. Windy are one of the very few who get the CoG spot on, their boats are very well balanced and can keep the speed up even when the going gets rough, the only others that are in the same league are Botnia Targa and Paragon and Axopar, and strangely enough they are all Scandinavian and have sterndrives! I wouldn’t take any notice of the view that only shaft drives can have the correct CoG, thats plain rubbish when consider how many boats have drives and perform very well if you trim them correctly. A conventional shaft drive never really planes, its half on the plane at best so has a completely different running angle to a sterndrive boat.

Thanks, Spannerman! Do you have any experience on the Marex 350 CC? This is the only real (but hard to find) alternative I can see.

Not exactly that model but have worked on quite a few of their other boats, solid scandy build quality, very practical and seaworthy.
