What?! I can't sail as well dead down wind as a bit of ply, string, bungee and ingenuity? To be honest though, by 3 minutes into the video I was already thinking 'only one hour fifty seven minutes until my trick at the helm is over. Is it too early for another cuppa? I bet she's eaten the last of the good biscuits. Maybe I should go and look at the AIS. Ooh was that a Dolphin? No, just a wave.' Its for the best if I keep busy with my hands on the wheel.
I'm going to have to download this though to keep in my 'when stuff goes wrong' folder. On the other hand, I'm not sure under what circumstances I'd deploy such a cool looking bit of improvisation. Servo pendulum paddle fell off? Or is it jfor boats without windvane steering whose battery charging capacity can't keep up with tge electronic autopilot?
The comment under the video says: "Sailing on South-Atlantic, Cape Town to Cape Verde, 4100 nm ".
The guy was actually on the last leg of a solo circumnavigation on an old 31-foot sailboat when the windvane broke.
If you google "Windy Self Steering", you'll find the story and the windvane he later engineered and is now (or at least was) selling.
