windscreen

Many moons ago I saw a 40'+ yacht that had a slideaway hardtop section that could slide forward so you didn't decapitate yourself as you went down/up.

Personally, I'd try it 'as is' for a season or two before making a decision - you'll probably get to like it.

ah, welcome to the world of YBW.

thanks for the input.
:D

It will stay there for now, but will end up being changed because it's too low to have a cockpit tent off it - which, if you see my OP, was the reason for changing it.... And we need a cockpit tent.

It may be worth going with one of those "one size fits all" cockpit tents based on flexi tent poles as part of a "lets just see what we really need" solution. Saw one on a boat in St Katz, just can't remember the make....

We agree with the keep it gang. We love WO, but the boss informs me that she wants more weather protection. If I was ever to change boats, it would be for something with a hard top - especially if we were going to live aboard. Hopefully something that still sails as well!

Contrary to popular belief, we don't have one.
They are excellent, but last year did not have one big enough for our 35ft aft cockpit

Looking again at the pictures, it should be simple to rig something up that attaches to the bottom of the main boom and covers the whole cockpit.
Having the mizzen mast to attach to at the stern should make it easier to make it more weatherproof than with ours.
A template using a cheap B&Q garden tarp or clear polythene would be easy to start with. You could then get a 'cover' made up from this pattern knowing it would be OK.
We had a two in one design - the summer version just attached at guardwire level to keep the rain out but let the air circulate (another important consideration with a steel boat) and the winter version also had sides that attached at deck level all round. As ours also fitted on the rear of the doghouse thing via a sewn rope into a slider, we had a zipped 'door' in both sides for easy access/exit - which is important when you are going in and out at least a couple of times a day as you don't want to be crawling about on your hands and knees.
When you are next down, give me a shout and I can always help out with bits and pieces of plastic/fittings/supports/rope etc that are languishing in my storage container to see if something can be done.
If we use sticky back plastic, we might get a Blue Peter badge too! :o
