Hello,

I have just purchased a Windpilot Atlantic IV, no details can be found from their website regarding these models built in circa 1975.

The are Auxillary rudder types and weigh 50 to 70KG. Having taken delivery of it I am a tad worried attaching it to my Contessa 32 which is already pointing high in the bow and very low in the stern.

The vane mechanism is very stiff and I would like to service it, however I can not figure out how to remove the main drive shaft. Does anyone have any advice?

The windvane:

The bush I am trying to replace lies below a large washer that acts as a clutch - however it is spot welded onto the threaded shaft?!

Having removed the above I would have to remove this mini tiller - but I can't figure out how it was attached to the main shaft.

All the better to see with, I found the answer to the problems.

35 years old and not a speck of rust - imagine the same from anything made from SS these days!

1. To remove the threaded clutch nut - attach the sprocket and tighten clutch hit it with a hammer and it should break free. Use a soft hammer not to damage the gear.

2. To remove the mini tiller - attach grips and work it lose.

Advice came from the manufacturer. After 35 years the parts may need some WD40.

I've now purchased 2 Windpilot systems and have found the owner Peter Fotherham execeptionally helpful.

If I were you I'd just drop him an e-mail (available from his website).
