Does anyone have a Lofrans Royal, and can offer advice?

Ours has become very stiff. We followed the advice sheet maintenance section, and removed the three pronged wheel, the first clutch cone (if that's what you call it) and the gypsy easily, but cannot get the second clutch cone off. The key on the shaft is loose, but cannot be prised out, and we cannot work out whether to try to force the cone off over the key, or to persist on forcing the key off. After that we will need to open up the main unit, which according to advice on the YBW forums, is even worse!

It all looks as if it is on tapered shafts, so should come apart - eventually.. May need a puller.
Which numbers in this diagram are you stuck on?

Hi Ali, I guess you're sorted by now but the shaft isn't tapered. I've taken a number of these apart and they can be difficult if they've never been dismantled before. I found the most tricky is getting the ring under the capstan drum (part no 345) off. Sometimes the only way is to drive it out with a sledge hammer and hardwood block. Don't be timid, give it a good thump! Once you've had it apart, grease well and repeat once a year then it won't have a chance to gum up again.

Thanks, everyone, but I posted this in January 2014, and sorted the problem out in February 2014!

However, because of this experience, and the problems we had even after that bit had been successfully dismantled, I am buying ghostlymoron's spare windlass - as he knows, and that is probably why he resuscitated this long dead thread.
