Im going to be installing 1 of these in the very near future once our engineer has cut the Stainless plate rady for fitting...

I think im ok with the general wiring looking at the diagram but...

I'd like to ask if thers a general theory to where to put the control box?

My reason of asking is obviously water/electrics dont mix and it looks like it requires the main power and the switches to be connected in relevant forms to the relay to output power. Looking at the wiring thats already i nthe boat, the foot switch in the bow is in the chain locker - should the wiring be re routed elsewhere to keep it out of the way of rope/chain? If so im curious as to where i should be looking to place this control box?

Not sure if anyone has fitted this style of windlass before, i just dont want to spend a day fitting it all up to dfind ive put it somewhere thats going to mean in 6 months time it stops working

Sorry I am not able to help with the installation.
But, have you already bought the windlass?
 
I had a southpacific and had no problem with it except the foot switches are not that good as they leak and then fail to work. I would recommend that the control box is fitted in a dry place. I used another make of foot switch but i can not remember which make i used and it was on my old boat so i can not find out for you.

Agreed maybe a little harsh, the control box and batteries on ours (master winch) are 10 feet away from the winch, and operated by a push on/push of switch. fixed vertically on the box that covers the winch. If you are going further away from the batteries then the answer is heavier duty cables.

I appreciate the OP will not want a chain coming across his footways, but our way saves "hairy" moments, also as a fishing machine the anchor goes up and down lots of times during the day.

Yes the unit has been purchased as a preferred choice by my dad.

That's actually something I never thought go, fitting the box further away from the winch itself

Its on my adgenda to investigate how to sort the wire runs on my next visit and possibly start installing the relevant parts

There is already a foot switch installed on the boat so will be wiring that to suit.

can you advice which are the better makes ?

I'm about to order a extra capstan for my boat,
the old one is Lofrans, no problem, except with the stability of the company,
how about Quick marine ? have a good deal on TB6

Hi BartW

Quick are reasonable.
You will get what you pay for.
Lofrans if you can get one is very good.
Lewmar is my first choice.

But cheap isn't particularly good when it comes to windlasses.

probly.... but this was the preference of my old man whos footing the bills - i just get the leg work and reading to do lol

I had looked to see about having it refurbed but its a nightmare in the highlands for anything of a specific nature like that - which adds cost/time to anything you want done.

thanks for the info,
agree about importance of quality of windlasses,
but sometimes prices for boat parts depend a lot on how many stages of distributors and dealers are involved as you know ;-)

I finally got a "service" contact at Lofrans, if you need I'll pm it
it took me a year to order some spares, finally got a contact at Mets.
Lalizas - lofrans has been through a huge restructering as you probably know.
 
Have South Pacific vertical jobbie, control box aft and hand held cable with their up/down switches, long enough to reach the fore deck and when used in wheel House the excess stowed in a cut off washing up liquid container, leaving enough slack to reach the helm.

Don't like foot switches, consider them a PITA as the rubbers split and one has to make sure its isolated after use, ok if solo but not with clog huggers on-board.
