Could anyone that was sailing around the Felixstowe/Pennyhole Bay area yesterday afternoon tell me what wind speeds they recorded. My anemometer isn't working but I just looked at the Location Weather for Languard point on this sight and it recorded 12-14 knots. The Sandettie Lightbuoy which I know is a fair distance away however recorded 16 - 26knots which would be more in line with my estimation. Incidently the Walton on Naze records say it never got worse than 13knots all day, which is planet cuckoo land. Perhaps their machine needs an oil and grease up.

I agree there is often a discrepancy between the official view of wind speed and what we actually experience. I put this down to the fact that forcasters are more concerned with average wind speeds wheras we tend to go by the maximum gusts.
As I write there is a good case in point - the average wind speed is force 6, but there have been two gusts in the last hour of 40mph. See this very useful site based on Sheerness. weather site
