Hi,
I have a NASA clipper windspeed indicator but it seems the the masthead fitting has been removed
/damaged. Can I buy a new masthead fitting to suit does anyone know? I can't find fitting alone on the net, only the entire system. Loathe to buy the whole thing when it appears to be only missing the bit that actually measures the speed.

Thanks

There should be a cable going up the mast, to the masthead vane.
Nasa might sell you a new vane, but from expierance these instruments are nothing but trouble. I would try another manufacturer.
There was a post on wind instruments within the last 2 weeks.

Thanks very much for all the info. I have found the topic from a fortinight ago and that is very helpful. It seems I have the wrong make anyway and should replace the whole lot! Hmm... Ah well.... I must say its very helpful to be able to tap into all this experience. many thanks.

In my experience the NASA unit is good and NASA very helpful. Give them a call as your first port of call - they can supply mast head unit or spare parts. They also fix them if you have a faulty one - send it back to them - all nice and cheap. I think you have to remember to purchase price when compairing these things.

Thanks very much guys. Thats a different tack. It is just the cups Halcyon23 as the indicator itself is still there. Do you know where I can get them please?

Many thanks

Entirely agree with Hardley, the wind system stuff from Nasa is rubbish IMHO. I have fitted three to different boats, and only one has not (yet) had a problem.

Mainly the trouble seems to be in the anemometer itself, which is simply not designed adequately, as either the cup assembly or electronics pack up quickly.

I tried to dissuade one of my friends from having one of these, but he insisted, and I fitted it. It performed for less than 4 months before he was complaining about erratic or non-existent readings.

May I suggest that you aim a little higher in the league tables and go for a more reliable make. We have ST60 equipment but it is a lot of money, and as others here will be able to advise, there are other good quality makes out there that will last well.

Dickies stock the cups in Bangor (says something, surely) so maybe also down south. If not you can order from NASA http://www.nasamarine.com/ . I also lost the pin which receives the cups on my unit but NASA will send you one FOC if you need it. I am not impressed with the instrument but will continue to repair it for £15 a go rather than splash out on buying / fitting another. I tend to agree with posting above - why have a wind instrument? I can tell its windy when the boat leans over too much.

Brilliant! Thanks everyone. As a relative novice, I feel I need all the help I can get and a wind speed indicator falls in that category. I will persevere with this as long as I can repair it cheaply. Thanks again for the advice.
