Wind instrumentation

Is it the PB200 that you're considering? If it's half as good as I read, go for it!
...not inexpensive, though...

Well, actually its the PB150

The way I read it is
The PB150 is NMEA 0183 version - the PB200 is the NMEA 2000 version.

I think that the older NMEA 0183 version would be easier to integrate into the existing Seatalk ST60+ instruments.

But I have already found a bit of a problem.
Airmar kindly sent me the programming guide.
It seems that the transducer transmits so much data that there isnt enough bandwidth on a standard 4800bd NMEA 0183 interface.
However, I think it will be enough to capture all the data I'm looking for.

Otherwise, it would mean a NMEA2000 version and then a more complicated bridge to pass the wind info onto the old Seatalk bus.

However, I do like the transducer

Where did you read the good reports?
I'm interested in the actual accuracy of the wind data

I'm afraid I read about it this summer on an Italian magazine, while onboard a neighbour sailing boat in my marina.
The owner was enthusiastic and was planning to fit it.
But as I recall, I also googled around a bit and found further info on some websites and forums.

Thanks MapisM and grumpy o g

I've seen some of those but some I didnt find.
I even missed a post on PBO in these forums.

It seems to me that the PB100 has been upgraded to PB150 - both for NMEA 0183
And that the PB200 is the NMEA2000 version.

I've just had anothe good read of the technical manual and it seems that in its default setting, the PB150 weather station is transmitting virtually constantly at 4800bd.
The data (NMEA Sentences) it transmits is
GGA - Standard GPS Fix Data
HDT - Heading relative to True North
MDA - Meteorological Composite - Barometric pressure, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point, wind direction, wind speed
MWD - Wind Direction and Speed, with respect to north
MWV (Relative) - Wind Speed and Angle, in relation to the vessel’s bow/centerline
MWV (Theoretical)) - Wind Speed and Angle, in relation to the vessel’s bow/centerline
VTG - Relative Wind Speed and Angle
VWT - True Wind Speed and Angle - if water speed is known
ZDA - Time and Date

There is free PC software available from Airmar but it doesn't yet have any alarms. They say that a new version is imminent.
However, I might be tempted to knock up one of my little Windows apps or extend my current anchor alarm software to include this info. To keep Roger happy, it would have to speak!!!

I think it would be useful to have a historical trace of barometric pressure, temperature, wind strength and direction over time. Might help in forecasting etc.

All this in addition to the real requirement of just a wind input.

However, I still havent decided yet to go for the more conventional option or this rather different approach.

Any thoughts?
