wind generators

Not a Contessa, but a Rival 34, which is comparable as far as the available space is concerned. We have an Aero4Gen on a SS pole attached to the pulpit and are quite pleased with its performance and location. Aesthetically, I am afraid it does not do any favours to the fine, elegant stern, but then everything is a compromise.

I have an old Aerogen which came with the boat, and it is very good. They no longer make them but it is equivalent to their current smallest model.
It has been going almost non stop for twenty years and the rotor bearings are still perfect. Every eight years, or so, it has needed a new pole bearing, an easy job. I have found the company helpful and they have always dug out the obsolete bearing for me.
I had a flat plate welded to the pushpit, outboard on the port quarter (between the top and bottom tubes) and the unit is fixed to that using a thick rubber gasket twixt bracket and boat. Fixing it with U bolts would be just as good. I have used a short pole as a huge pylon is not needed on my swinging mooring. It could be a hazard underway but I always tie it off when sailing. Its function is to charge the battery between visits and not to provide huge amounts of energy for running fridges etc.
It is quiet, and silent in moderate winds which, to me, is vital. Some of the more modern windgens I would heave in the oggin.
