I think they normally have some kind of arrester to stop them spinning too fast.
Kinda ironic I guess that Wind Generators don't like too much wind.

According to the Beeb Toyota have now designed a brake override. If you override the brakes doesn't that mean you don't stop?

What did I just see?
I may be over sceptical but this is the sort of item that gets me very cynical. The nacelle of the generator seemed to explode. Now how did the cameraman know that was going to happen or does he just spend his whole life videoing generators in high winds in the hope that they will explode, fall over, turn into rocket ships etc.? The vast majority of them keep on spinning, or as someone else has said, slow down as a governor comes into action and, frankly, one minute of watching one spinning is about as much as I can take before I am bored.
There was no apparent movement in the column before the explosion, nor immediately after it but then we see the whole thing lying on the ground. It seems to me it was much more likely to have fallen over while the prop was still attached.
So what did I see? A bit of elaborate propaganda against the proliferation of wind farms or the news scoop of an extremely patient cameraman?

it must have malfunctioned to spin that fast in the first place.
then a blade disintegrates & allows another blade to strikes the tower causing it to collapse

It's this new fangled modern stuff that is the problem. Just down the road from me is a a proper windmill; the Nieuwe Veenmolen or New Windmill, built in 1654, . It has the possibility to reef the sails.

G7 oversped just before xmas. It boiled a transformer inside until it exploded and then it cut out and then just freewheeled. Nowhere near as much wind as in that video though.............!!!

Yes,G7 on Gunfleet sands. It has 2 phases and all the turbines on the S side are part of phase 2, an afterthought after phase 1. Could phase 3 extend to the old lighthouse at some stage??!!!
The daily maintenance is exhaustive. Tomorrows expected gale should be interesting. I'll be there.............
