Most of our winches are quite straightforward so far as servicing is concerned but these two are a little bit of a mystery. Self tailing Lewmar 34s of unknown vintage but quite posibly dating to 1980 when the boat was commissioned. There is no visible means of dismantlement on the top, no circlips, no bolt heads in the bottom of the socket. Two possibilities occur, one is that they dismantle from underneath, as it were. One of the pair needs to come off anyway to reposition the stripper arm in a more useful orientation, so that is definitely on the agenda. The other possibility is that the tops simply unscrew after hitting the stripper arm anticlockwise with a big soft hammer. There are marks which suggest this has been done in the past.
If anyone has succesfully stripped and rebuilt such machinery it would be good to hear from you.
