Anyone know a good source (book or web) with details of how one should service a winch properly? One of mine is not rotating smoothly and makes a lot of noise under load, and it's filthy inside. Should it be greased, not greased, oiled, not oiled, special grease, WD40 etc. etc.? I've had plenty of conflicting advice and I'm confused.

what winch is it?

basic principle is to take it apart, making sure you don't lose any springs and note what went where, clean all the bits (in paraffin or diesel) and smear liberally with waterproof grease before re-assembling.

one other hint: lewmar 2-speed winches contain internal gears which have nylon bearings. remove the axles and replace the nylon sleeves if damaged.

My winches are NZ made wilkies . They have an allen head screw in the bottom of the socket ; my question is: how do you hold the winch from turning when trying to undo the screw? maybe a filter wrench or something around the drum?

Any ideas anyone?

i would expect the screw to go into the fixed part of the winch so the drum shouldn't turn when you undo it. if it were attached to the drum it still wouldn't rotate as you would be turning against the ratchet. if the drum does turn you only need to put a few turns of rope round it.

OK, except don't grease the pawls and springs, use 3 in 1 oil or similar. Too much grease can cause them to stick.

The problem is that it is a two speed winch and the socket turns & hence the drum. It doesnt seem to be attached to a fixed part of the winch and is the only visible fastener on top.
Thanks , I will try undoing the screw with a good wrap of rope around the drum & see how I get on.

If they are Lewmar wichnes, why not go to their (somewhat confusing) www-site and download the maintenaince manual (bring patience, it's a big file).

If not, have a little read with the Lewmar instructions to get the genral ghist and then try step-by-step dismantle, clean, oil lightly and put together again in reverse order. (remeber the carton bow around it to avoid lost pieces.

In the unlikely case of your winches being Anderson 2-speed selftailers, please send me a PM and I mail you a manual/leaflet with instructions (I have two as one came with each of my 2 winch boxes.

have fun

chris
