Winch Replacement

I am going to treat myself to some ST winches, what l need from the forum is some idea of replacements. Currently l have Barlow (Australia) 24's how do these equate to Lewmar's / Antals etc? Am l right in saying that l should go up a size as well, whatever the modern equivalent comes out at ? Thx in advance. Phil

Check out Harken - I fitted a pair of 46STs two years ago for about 2/3 price of Lewmar equivalents. The size is something they call the 'power ratio': it means your force of, say, 1 unit on the handle is geared down to 24 units on the sheet, in the case of your 24s. Be careful to check this out as a 24 from some makers may equate to a 26 or a 22 with others, depending on how they do the sums (most of the manufacturers have very detailed specs on their websites). Also, I found that one of my local chandlers was able to beat any mail order price.

you might go up a size if the self-tailer means you'll no longer have a gorilla tailing for you. if you usually winch on your own, the fact that you can now use both hands on the handle will more than compensate for the slight extra friction.

can't speak for make, barlow are no longer available in the uk but they used to be a cheap alternative to lewmar. i always found them satisfactory. lewmar have the advantage of worldwide spares availability.

Antal are rated differently from Lewmar, a 16 Antal being roughly a 14 Lewmar.

interesting. the ratio of a winch depends on the length of the handle, i imagine antal assume a longer handle! perhaps it's a way of making their product look cheaper.
