Hi,

I have a few winches I would like to rechrome, I am based in Chichester, west sussex.
I have tried searching google and yell.co.uk but can’t find anyone to local, there must be someone in the solent area?
Southampton, Portsmouth etc etc.

Any ideas?

Thanks all as usual.

Simon

I have just had three winches rechromed, although by a company a few miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne. Although they did a good job at a very reasonable cost of £45, you lose the rougher surface in the middle of the winch.

G'day Woody 001,

Look for engineering companies that work on large hydraulics, like bulldozers etc, they re-chrome and polish hydraulic rams; (and other thing if you ask them nicely,) if your local engineering shop don't do it, they can put you in touch with the firm they use. Caterpillar have several outlets, they are called Austchrome here in Oz.
Listed under electroplating.

Avagoodweekend......

Hi Woody001. I do not know of any Chrome-Platers in your area but suggest when you find one you make sure the old plating is revers-plate removed ( not just buffed off ) and then have the drums re Knurled by a reputable machine shop who know what they are doing. Then have the drums re plated with "HARD-CHROME" Plating. This will not be cheep but if your winches are good ones then it may be well worth the cost against replacing them.
PS A good engineering and machine shop in you area may be able to help with a plater.
Hope this helps old-salt.

i had 2 done on my previous boat.
dont give them to just any old plating company, mine hade a good finish but they had "polished-out" the knurled finish as Old_Salt said.
lewmar offer a re-chroming service so the job ought to be right

Woody, check out previuos posts on this I have given cheap and reliable options despite carriage costs

Si

There's a local bloke in Emsworth who does Lewmar winch re-chroming, will try to get his details for you.

How come my vacant berth Northney has 'Swedish Lady' inscribed???

Tom

hard chrom is correct - tho any chromer should be able to do it - the shiny chrome is mostly nickel base plating , and they shd mask the knurled area whilst nickel plating, then chrome the lot

Re: winch re chroming!

I agree with your comments on masking the knurled area if the grip is still there, my suggestion to re knurl is quite often the grip has all gone along with the chrom. But I reiterate it will be required to be done by some one who knows what he is doing otherwise the re-knurled area will just be a mess.
Cheers old_salt.

Fareham Electroplating at Fort Fareham 01329-288831 do my plating and are quite reasonable. Never had a winch drum done though, but take on board the useful knurling and 'hard chrome' comments made in earlier mails.
