Winch installation orientation

I have bought 2 old Lewmar 30 self tailing winches to replace the originals.

I have the manual (relevant page attached 2/3speed ‘pic’) and I’m trying to workout the orientation compared to the ‘run in’ of the Genoa sheet compared to ‘output gear’.

Is the sheet input line between points A ? I’m a bit confused.

always have the load taken where the drive gear sits on the drum, or you will induce an unfair load onto the bearings

Once you have the old ones off their bases and the "new to you" self tailers in place, just make sure the spooling off point for the sheet is back into the cockpit!. Not a lot else to worry about, as long as they are direct replacements....

Unfortunately fitting holes don’t line up!

So are you saying put the ‘line under load’, to run in over the ‘main gear’ . ie, as per the right hand pic of the 2/3 speed winch, line runs in over ‘output gear’?

yes as 2/3 spd winch drg, the load is then transferred onto the central post / drum bearings
 
Really important to get winch orientation correct. I sailed on a Bavaria where the port winch had been incorrectly installed (180 degrees out). The starboard winch was correctly installed. After a few seasons there was enormous wear on the port winch , the starboard as good as new.

If you have a problem with holes not lining up up, or structures below deck limiting the drilling of new holes, you can have stainless steel adapter plates made up by a local engineering shop. These bolt onto the deck using existing holes, with the drilling template for the new winch also drilled and tapped into the plate so the winch will be in the correct orientation. The winch is then secured to the plate (dab of Locktite) using machine screws. The thickness of the SS plate needs to be at least 1.5x the diameter of the machine screws used.
