I'd like to mount an ipad on one of the halyard winches (which is under the sprayhood). Does anyone know of a bracket that will hold an ipad or any other general purpose bracket for speakers, etc, sited in winches?

I've found something called the winch wench which holds a cup (sold on Amazon), but nothing else. Looked at companies such as the Scanstrut Rokk. Thanks.

My "Railblazer Starport" sockets look suspiciously like winch sockets, but I haven't actually tried if they're the exact size yet. The winches lack the locking mechanism of the Starport though, so your iPad might go flying.

Also not sure if an iPad can handle the torque, but if it does work for winching it may well be cheaper than some winch handles I've seen for sale. ;)

Yes, that's it! This Aussie website (http://www.chsmith.com.au/Products/Railblaza-StarPort.html) says:
"Railblaza StarPorts are modeled on the existing winch handle receivers on most top brand Sailboat winches, and can be surface or recess-mounted on any sail or power Boat, Kayak, utility vehicle or ATV."

I'll wander into the chandlers waving my winch handle around and see if the shoe fits. Many thanks! As for controlling flying ipads, I'll see if I can bungee the frame down around the winch.

PS: think we saw you somewhere in the Rias in August...

Any chandlers worth their salt should have a winch handle in stock.

Personally, I'd like a fitting that made this all secure, somehow locked round the self tailer or winch barrel?

Just checked, they are the same size and interchangeable with winch sockets. We have their "Screengrabba", which fits an iPad or PC tablet and despite the poor spelling of their marketing team the kit is made pretty well. If you want something that doesn't hop away, consider adding a bulkhead Starport socket, they have a locking slider that holds the Screengrabba securely and you can then still use your winches for actual winching. You can see bits of it holding tablets here: https://sdfjkl.org/blog/2017-09-12-opencpn-in-practice/

As for the Rias in August - very possible. We're the guys with the distinctive reel of green polysteel rope dangling from the stern arch (its main purpose is apparently making us recognizable). We're down south now, just started exploring the Rio Guadiana.
