would MUCH appreciate suggestions (she knows that i broke one of the winches last w/e but i've replaced them both and with secondhand winches that are as big as beer kegs. they are difficult not to notice)

someone will correct me with exact figures i'm sure, but the self tailer make the man power applyed to the winch about 20% +/- less effecient, or so i am told. if you sail with crew as i usually do then regular winches are fine. single handed you just need to be strong enough to winch with one arm and tail with the other, the stuggle is to remember not to hold the sheet in your teeth to move your hand up as you can with a dingy!!!

On my previous boat the sheet winches were knackered and I found a pair of Lewmar ST replacements at a boat jumble. Transformed my sailing when short-handed. Current boat has all ST winches and I wouldn't want to go back to the vanilla variety.

the great virtue of self-tailing winches is that, depending on how you run your boat, either she doesn't have to leave the galley to tail for you or you don't have to leave your bunk to tail for her.

Who says you can use your teeth in a dinghy???
As an ex-very competitive-dinghy-sailor I have to tell you that I have two false teeth at the front as a result of falling for that rumour!!!!!

Just replaced my 30 Lewmars for decent 30 ST that I bought on ebay. Got fed up with trying to tail and winch at the same time!

BTW I am still looking for a single Lewmar 16ST (black alloy), and will be selling my standard Lewmar 30s soon.
