Friday night, Back home from work, Boat already to, Beer, ice, milk, Gin & tonic and crisps on board although no bait, but decided to get out on the evening tide!

Ok single handed out of the moorings out to the Swale, very quiet and about F2 of wind.

Anchor for the night put about 45 meter of chain in about 8 meter of water at high tide, Telly on watch silly J Ross, up in the morning and a bit of fishing and watch the F1 qualifying as all of a sudden the voltage drops to 10V ****

Well should be ok I will start the genie?

Genie battery is dead!

Ok will hook up to House batteries? Dead!

Ok will start engines? Port engine batteries dead!

Ok Starboard......thanks god it started! Wow what a relief!

Now got below and jump started the genie! And put battery charger on!

NOW what I forgot to do when I got out was to isolate the genie and the engines. I have not done it before because we normally run the genie loads and keep the batteries all topped up!

Learned my lesson, just cant think what I would have done if engines would not start?

Joined Sea Start. Always works for me /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Not at all .... this have nothing to do with Engine Maintenance...

If anything, it should be boat electrics, taylor made to your vessel and battery management .... with solar panel charging and the value of wind generators on a MOBO.

Cue Malaprop suggesting compulsory engine maintenance training... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif [ QUOTE ]

Nah, preventative treatment for Altzheimers more useful.
Or a score of checklists everywhere (see previous threads).

But would recommend Tom rebuild his electrics so that can't happen again - been there, done that after domestic battery died and took gps with it.

PS Do engines really need maintenance? I thought they went on for ever . . .

The genie batteries were already bad but yes all batteries are in parallel when going along and charging!

In fact when on shore power if I want to charge the engine batteries I need to leave switches on!

Nothing to do with engines or design of boat , It was all my fault thinking this good time will last for ever ?

Even not replacing a dodgy battery for 50-80 quid and just going out was complete my fault and aloofness.

Will not do it again it was just a reminder on how serious you need to take going out to sea!

I could not even lift my anchor up with any power, so I would have stuck in the Swale for ever!

Now that is a thought!

Tom

Ps new genie battery on order arrives Tuesday.

[/ QUOTE ]erm - really?
I appreciate it wouldn't be easy ... but not be able to lift it at all??

Against any kind of current it would be almost impossible if single-handed.
If swmbo were at the helm, then probably yes.
