Read about the Wiley Almanac in MBM, and have just had a look at their on line demo.

From the demo in looks fanantastic, as MBM indicate, and its FREE.

Not released until 11th May, but if it's half as good as it looks, it will be wonderful. Only good for us South Coast bums at the moment.

Have a look, if you've not already, www.wileyalmanac.com

Very interesting. For those that don't know much about them, Wiley are a large, privately owned American Publishing Company. Their main product area is Scientific and other journals, although they also have a fair sized non-fiction and reference list - which they are trying to grow - and they have an excellent reputation as a quality publisher.

This must represent quite a large investment for a relatively limited market and I've been racking my brains to think how they propose to make any money out of it, aside from advertising revenues. I've come to the conclusion that its main purpose is to drive traffic towards their other nautical products, rather than to make a profit per se.

Whatever their motivations, I've made a note in my diary for May 11th. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

It's been in development for about 18 months and is edited by Neville Featherstone, the guy who was one time editor of Reed's Nautical Almanac and writing of various pilot books.

Downloaded this today.

Looks good, but is a first Beta release, seems not complete. Tidal stream animations are to come, and some port data seems missing or incomplete. For example couldn't find any info on Weymouth. Whilst there is a photo of Yarmouth, I couldn't see a chartlet.

Most ports look reasonably complete, but I can't claim to have tested rigourously.

First impressions are good, but it is clearly still under development. Fair enough, Wiley do say it's a first Beta release, hopefully updates and improvements will come along.

Have a go at downloading, and see what you think.

Some updates come through today.

Now have Weymouth, and complete Yarmouth, and no doubt lots of other things I'd not noticed.

Well done Wiley, keep up the good work.
