I have an IPhone 4s on a monthly Uk O2 contract. In Greece I have a Cosmote dongle for the laptop with 5gb data per month allowance. So - what to do in this country and France ?

I see I can make my Iphone into a hotspot and enable wifi on the laptop/Ipad that way but apparently it eats battery power. Does it make sense to buy a separate pay monthly Sim and dongle bundle ? What do other OP's do ?

Vodafone do some good deal on Data only sims. I would get a MiFi unit and a 30 day contract sim which would give you good 4G speeds, share with upto 5 devices and it is easy to cancel.

As a result of the recent EU changes you should be able to roam in UK and France with your Greek setup with no extra charge.

Some networks discourage tethering, for example Three UK roaming outside the UK, although I believe Ofcom are looking into that.

Y'know, I seriously misread the thread title.....the first word, actually. I really MUST go to Specsavers....

I'm going to need new reading glasses, quite disappointed this thread isn't about "wife sharing on board". :o

I have an iPhone 6 on a three contract. I bought the phone as a stand alone so managed to get a good sim only deal from them costing a tenner a month which includes 8gb of data as we'll a son tethering. This is more than adequate for my needs and I either leave the phone plugged in while on board or if I have a few devices I want to connect at once I connect my e7d mfd to my phone then share the connection from that to my other devices.

It does, but if you’re using a laptop then you have a USB port right there to plug the phone into and keep it charged.

The best approach is probably going to depend more on the tariffs you already have and can buy, than on the hardware you use them with.

For what it’s worth I have an iPhone on Vodafone with 20gb per month, free anywhere in Europe (including outside the EU, like Norway) and a flat per-day rate further afield like Japan. I wouldn’t consider using any other device or SIM on my travels.

I guess it depends if you need to use the phone while someone uses the internet.

We bought a mifi with a data sim on a good deal. Originally we were with 3 but changed to EE, there are advantages to having a device that is not locked to a network particularly if you are travelling further afield.

More details on the exact setup on our blog:

We've been using iPhones tethered to our iPad for the past couple of years in Greece, using initially an EE deal that included roaming in Europe. Since last June last year, all roaming charges have been removed and I have a 25 gb deal with EE which provides more than enough data for us both. iPhone is on charge whilst on the boat, which is where we use it: off the boat we tend to use cafe wifi hotspots.
We used to have a mifi with a Greek sim but the iPhone is cheaper than the Greek sim charges and the data connection is faster (4G where available as opposed to 3G max with the mifi).

The other reason to upgrade either your phone or to a MiFi is that your 4s is now not going to be supported by Apple, so no more security updates and it will only do 3G so the speed is going to be quite slow relative to 4G. You can pick up great refurbished iPhone 6 upwards (when 4G starts I seem to recall) on places like Music Magpie, where i have got some great deal recently.

As others have stated you can roam in Europe with Vodafone, so getting a Sim from them should see you right in most places. I am not sure if other networks do the same, I imagine they do, I have had good service from Vodafone, but I am sure their service will be a mixed bag as they all are.
