I have one of these installed on the boat -

Amazon.co.uk

Generally very good but I'd like to improve the reception, it is installed at the back of a cupboard which is not ideal for signal but great from a practical perspective. There are two antenna on the unit, I assume one to receive and one to transmit, both attached to the unit using mini SMA connector. Is it possible to get an externally mounted RX antenna that could improve reception and any idea which antenna on the unit to remove as they are not labelled as RX or TX 😏

Thanks in advance.

After some research I got one of these;

KASER 4G LTE Antenna External Mimo Omnidirectional 698-2700MHz SMA Connector with CRC9 Adapter TS9 Compatible with 4G Router Gain Up 12dBi (2 x 10M Cable)

Not sure if it will fit yours. I went for MiMo Monidirectional and hight (as in 12) dBi gain. The idea to place this up the mast when anchored. The 10M cable is a pain....

You can get cheaper.

However I did not notice a huge difference in some intial testing but I think that is because I had good line of sight to an base antenna. Next year I might test at my favourite anchorage is that is not quite as performant on the internal antenna.

I am planning the same router with a Lebara sim (Vodaphone network) via a Moneysavingexpert link. 12gb for less than £4 a month.

I asked my mate in the mobile phone antenna installation business and he recommended a Poynting puck aerial. He uses them in commercial applications.

He warned against long cable lengths and said 5m is absolute max as you start getting more losses in the cable than gain achieved from antenna so my plan is a coach roof location.

Poynting PUCK-2 White Outdoor 6dBi Omni-Directional 4G LTE Marine Antenna w/ SMA-Male Connector

Very good information, thank you, my cable run is less than 3M so all good, any idea which antenna port I use for the external?

You use both, the puck antenna has 2x MIMO/SMA connectors. Check the one I linked to will work for your network, eg Vodaphone/Three as there is a comment on the BBB website about this particular item, otherwise next model up which also provides a GPS output.
