Wifi in the marina - how?

[ QUOTE ]

You have WiFi at home? Wow - does that mean I could work from the car outside?

[/ QUOTE ]

I've got a few favourite locations to park up and 'borrow' someone's home wifi for a bit of work on the PDA. Much quicker and cheaper than GPRS via the mobile and Bluetooth.

Also note the secuity issues and beware of sending any private information.

Fuly agree about the security issues relating to others being able to access your system, but not convinced that information is at risk by being transmitted over the airwaves. We are talking about packetised data on a digital connection, which would be very difficult for another user to pick up, let alone interpret.

Its not the same as listening to somebody else's conversation on the VHF! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I stand to be corrected, as ever !

I have got the Icon (crossed out) and clicked on it. It shows 'Network Connections' and lists my dial up connection, then under 'LAN or Highspeed Connections' it lists 2, one of which says '1394 connection enabled' the other says 'Local Area Connection' cable unplugged.

So it seems I'm WiFi ready? Does yours work down below decks or just up top?

Working on the boat has got to beat staring at thes 4 walls!

I find it unbelievable that MDL don't have WiFi yet! All but the tiniest harbours that I visited this summer had WiFi, more often than not free.

You would think that with the prices that they charge that they would be offering proper facilities. Why do people put up not only with being ripped off, but given poor service at the same time?

If there is no wireless network in range, the Icon will continue to have a red cross on it. In the Network connections, there will be your Internet connection, along with the 1394 and LAN Icons- these usually signify a hard wired network, hence the LAN disconnected. As Shy talk says, there should be a Wireless Network Card Icon on the same screen as the other connections.

If this is not working, you may have to go into The WIreless Network set up Wizard and this will check if all the hard ware is functioning. GO to Control Panel and click on Internet and Networking, then find network set up wizard. As you go into this, it will tell you if wour network cards are plugged in. ALso try looking at Windows XP help on wireless networking and make sure you are set up correctly.

Mine works below decks most of the time.

ps- Torquay Marina has WiFi, but not courtesey of MDL!!

So when Wifi finds girlie it will work from the spare bedroom!

We use NTL dial up always on for £12.45/month I think. They keep trying to push Broadband at higher cost but what we have works fine yet friends with NTL BB have problems.

It seems we have a 1394 Net Adapter connection enabled but I'm still confused as to whether this is the real thing or if it still needs some hardware to be plugged in somewhere, there are no visible aerials or owt sticking out.

Yes I saw Tomes report on using it in St Peter Port and I wish I had thought to try ours, it was on board but I went to the library to get my e-mails.

I note the security bit, quite scary. We have a firewall installed but no airconditioning yet....

I'm reading these posts whilst sitting inside my boat in the marina in Melilla (Spanish enclave in North Africa). At first I had a very poor signal with the laptop in the saloon but in the sitting area in the aft cabin it works very well. The system is operated by the marina but I don't know who the service provider is. We have to pay seven euros a month.

1394 and Local Area Connection are something different.

[/ QUOTE ]
1394 is commonly referred to as Firewire; generally used for hardwire connecting video recorders to PC's/laptops for downloading recordings.

Local Area Connection is a cable (RJ45) for making a physical connection from PC/laptop to a network.

Neither are what you want for wifi. Airbridge is the way to go assuming your laptop is not wifi enabled. Somebody recently posted a link to a PC and parts supplier which seemed pretty good to me.

And where am I? Sitting on Seraph in the Spanish sunshine using a wifi hotspot in the marina /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

In Hythe, why don't you find a few liked minded folks and an enterprising home-owner within range and offer to pay for their ADSL broadband if you can put a Wifi basestation on it? Secure the wifi using WEP or LEAP (if you want to restrict it to those sharing the costs - or just leave it open if you're feeling generous). Probably works out much cheaper than if you had to pay Square Mile.

Assumes that you can get ADSL in Hythe though....

There may not be a visible antenna.

Just to clarify my hopeless wording, go to the start menu, right click on my computer, then left click properties. CLick the " Harware Tab" and then click " Device Manager" There will be a list. CLick on the little "+" next to network adapters and see if a wireless network card is present.

Not sure I'd want any Tom DIck or Harry downloading anything they liked through my home broadband, so mine is Wepped. I've heard tales of people driving round and looking for open network wireless hotspots to download their less savoury content.

THIS IS HOW

Simple Steps....

Go and buy one of THESE It may be a little bit more expensive than some but gives you the ability to move it about for the best reception.

Plug it into you USB port.

Install the software that comes with it.

The software will search for available wifi networks

Select the network name that matches the name of your yacht clubs network.

If it prompts for a username and password you'll need to find out from the club how to get one. If not, happy surfing.

With any luck you may pick up other unrestricted wireless networks. Give them a try.

But be careful. See HERE

Re: THIS IS HOW

Yes, the linksys stuff seems good. I bought a linksys wireless broadband router a few months ago and got a usb wireless adapter free!! All working ok.

Re: THIS IS HOW

So - in the case of nicking a bit of bandwidth on an open wifi - how are we supposed to be able to tell if the owner has left it open for free access or hasn't remembered to secure it. .... do we go and knock on the door? If so, which door?!
