Hi there, i have a wifiwand aerial on my boat (wifi aerial) that picks up a signal from the marina wifi so i can get the internet on my pc. The wifiwand is connected to my laptop via a usb port. I would not get a wifi signal without the wifiwand. What i would like to know is, is there another device i can plug into my laptop that will re transmit the signal on my boat so i can use my mobile, ipad ect? thanks

You can buy signal boosters on ebay and elsewhere but they are illegal.

Ofcom says “Repeater devices transmit or re-transmit in the cellular frequency bands. Only the mobile network operators are licensed to use equipment that transmits in these bands. Installation or use of repeater devices by anyone without a licence is a criminal offence under Section 8 of the Wireless Telegraphy Act 2006. Any person found guilty of installing or using such devices without a licence would be liable on conviction to a fine of up to £5,000 and/or up to 51 weeks’ imprisonment.”

Can't you use Skype or some other VOIP through your PC.

""Repeater devices transmit or re-transmit in the cellular frequency bands""...

Is that right?

I think you aren't allowed to boost/retransmit wifi without permission but not because its in the cellular/mobile range?

+1. Brilliant. Don't need your PC to create a wifi hotspot. Search the forum. There are other threads on this exact subject.

+1 and the R36 is 12v which helps!

Check which devices are supported by the R36. I have used an Alfa Tube(N) but you can also use the Alfa ASW036NH. No connection but http://www.crucialwifi.co.uk/Boating,Yachting,Marina,_Trucking_,Caravan/cat740999_1662751.aspx supplied all my bits and they can also flash the correct firmware to the R36 if needed.

Needs a bit of tinkering buit once working is fine. You do need to log onto the R36 to select the relevant hotspot you wish to connect to. My Galaxy S3 was fine but some older Android phones (2.3) may need firefox as a browser to work.

As stated, there are quite a few recent threads here including the Alfa solutions.

If you have a recent mac laptop the functionality to create a local wifi network is built in.
