Ah, didn't know that. If it's an android phone then one of macro apps should be able to send an sms once in a while.
This works if you do need to send a text now and then to keep the sim alive. I set it up to send a text to itself on the 1st of each month, worked and swiftly followed by a text from gifgaff saying it wasn't free and the balance.

If you set the sim (in a phone prior to inserting it into the automation device) to always forward voice calls to a different number, when you then rang the number from a phone the network by forwarding the call, would generate a chargeable transaction. Text messages would still be received by the sim so the automation device would still work. Not tried it but think this could work.

I now have an explanation as to this six month cut off:
If it's not used for 6 months it does deactivate and everything on the account is lost.

This is inline with Ofcom as there are only a limited amount of numbers so any not in use do have to be recycled. We do give a generous 6 months where as some companies only give just over 2 months. You can find details of this here: Pay-as-you-go mobile: use it or lose it


So if you are looking to use a sim card in this way bear this in mind.
