Have a look at the blink xt2, no subscriptions, camera runs for 2 years on one set of batteries, or can be run from USB power supply . Base station runs off USB power. Camera is waterproof, and can be triggered to record when motion is detected and send an alert to your phone and record the clip to the cloud, it has a microphone and speaker so you can talk to whoever you're watching and they can talk to you. The camera also has a thermometer so you can see the temperature or set alerts if the temp goes above or below a preset value. You can use multiple cameras if required.

You can view's the cameras live feed or look at any saved clips from your phone as well as arm and disarm the motion sensors and configure all the settings.

I use them at home and they work very well.they've been fit and forget and very reliable.

I was thinking about putting one on the boat just to keep an eye on things.

I use Blink XT2 and agree that they are very good. For the boat though, I use a Ring Stick Up Cam. They are battery powered so will still work if the shore power is lost. They have a rechargeable battery which can last for months at a time if used carefully. You do not need to subscribe to the Ring cloud service if you only need to drop in on the cam and check the boat, otherwise, you can pay for cloud storage which means video clips which are captured with motion detection will be saved for you.

do you have to pay for the app in any way.

No, there is no other payment or subscription cost apart from the one off cost of the blink xt2 cameras and base station that come as part of the kit you buy. Think I paid 200 quid for the 3 camera kit this time last year, and it's all still running nicely and on the original set of batteries that came with each camera.

I have one camera fixed to a tree pointing at the front of the house. Another fixed to the boys climbing frame in the back garden pointing at the back of the house and the other in the porch looking at the front door.

Cheers , so your back door isnt covered , see you later.

Have a look at the reolink range, the argus 2 camera, similar spec to the other cameras in this thread, long battery life, can be left plugged into USB, starlight (colour night vision using very low background light), no charges, just the camera cost, waterproof etc. Argus 2: Wire-Free Battery & Solar Powered Security Camera

Or go the cheap camera route and treat as almost disposable, these include 360 cameras, even internal cameras will work fine under canvas.

I'm glad this has come up because I'm looking for some security cameras for our boat. I have looked at the XT2 and this has had some great reviews. Having looked into this more I have found that the XT2 has been succeeded by the Blink Outdoor. The base station for the Blink Outdoor unlike the XT2 base station can now take a 256Gb flash drive which can also record locally whereas the XT2 couldn't. Both can still record to cloud but the recording time is very low unless you take out a subscription. 2 hours of cloud storage and then its overwritten. I know it's not recording all the time and only when it detects motion but the addition of a local flash drive on the new Outdoor camera is quite appealing for additional storage capacity.

I wasnt aware of the blink outdoor , looks like its not released yet - appears it will be released tomorrow (22nd oct) , but I have to say that the amount of cloud storage provided for recordings with the blink xt2 is really not an issue, I've never got anywhere near even 50% of the cloud storage used in the year I've had the blink xt2.

with the blink xt2 you can also download the video from the cloud to your phone if you do want to keep a given clip forever.
