Mistroma and GHA. Thank you both for the time that you have spent explaining this on here. My post might have sounded petulant and ungrateful. It was not meant that way - it was merely a bit of self analysis...Fortunately there are many on here who know much more than me and are a constant source of assistance. I hope that my post has not offended anyone.

Didn't come across in the least bit ungrateful, don't worry. Every boat should have a Pi onboard :)

For another thread, but it might just be possible to get a kindle working as a remote display with a Pi, maybe not much use in the real wet world in the cockpit but could be handy down below if it works. Watch for joyous post if it works ;)

If thats possible I wonder if it can be done for a Kobo Aura H2O ?

Problem with sim cards is that if one is cruising france, belgium, holland & channel islands , as I do most years i cannot do this cheaply.
Local sims are not cheap regardless of what people say, especially if one does not actually know what one wants. ( I do not have data on my home mobile have data blocked)
For instance most french telecoms shops will not speak english ( Yes I have tried) & when I tried translation via a friend living in Cherbourg they told me I needed a French residency to get one so that stopped that one.

I walked past an EE shop earlier and I'm pretty sure they were advertising a MiFi plus 20GB for about £25, it also said that would work in EU. I've read on here that the EE PAYG SIMs dont have the 2 month potential cut off that 3 do when used outside the UK. A couple of 3 SIMs would probably cover that sort of trip as well I would have thought ?

I agree, it didn't come over that way at all. I'd been feeling a bit guilty because I hadn't added a simple non-techie summary of what all the gibberish I'd posted would actually accomplish.

Interesting idea a about the Kindle, let me know how that pans out as we have 2 on the boat. Display update might be annoyingly slow but worth trying. Might be OTT as I can now connect to the Pi (or R36) using 3 phones, 2 tablets and 2 laptops. A bit overkill now I think about it, but I'd try anyway. :D:D:D

Thanks for the Openplotter update, I might backup my SD-Card and try it out. I went straight to Raspian because I knew I'd be able to play the odd video and also set it up as an Access Point. I thought the CPU wouldn't be up to OpenCPN. I'll still have a look at it when I get some time.

Not going that great with the kindle, the idea was to use node red to create a webpage and broadcast that with a huge font.

If you haven't played with it, node red is great!

But.... as the Pi Zero has an armv6 architecture the node-red which is already in the raspbian image doesn't work, and I can't really find enough interest to dig through google and get it working.

The kindle should work, limited but might be handy sometimes like offshore down below to have a big display of SOG & COG near the bunk.

I initially thought you might go down the route (or root :D) of hacking the Kindle and then using apt-get etc. to use SSH or other means to remote access Pi from Kindle. Pity node-red doesn't work, I thought it was implemented on Pi (+ BeagleBone Black & Android). I think I'll park this until I get to Sardinia and have more time.
