Wife says its ether 240V, or she won’t come cruising.

Help……………………………….

I am in a dilemma, I have shore power that supplies 240V when alongside, but nada when cruising and anchor hopping.
The Mrs, apparently, wont go more that 3 day without using her GHD hair straighteners.
I have looked at a diesel inboard gen set but the 15K price tag scared me off ( I am Scottish eh ).
I was thinking of in inverter, but would I need to increase my alternator size ? and battery bank ?, or would a cheep and nasty petrol generator do a job.

Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

Forget the inverter idea - you don't get anything for nothing with electricity.

A 1000 watt inverter will draw at least 83 amps/hour from your batteries not counting incidental losses. This will flatten normal batteries in no time. Running the main engine with a bigger alternator seems guaranteed to annoy everyone around you.

There are many small petrol gennies around, some are very cheap. I bit the bullet years ago and bought a Honda 2.0kw (constant output 1600 watts) for about £800 and it works tirelessly and is very quiet.

Others swear by cheaper ones, you pays your money................... !

A small diesel genny is nothing like £15k, I seem to remember a Pagura 3000 is something like £3k, as I looked at fitting one to the Windy, as it's also very small and light. Only 3 kw ish, but enough for starighteners, hair dryer, kettle, though not at the same time.

edit: just noticed you're in Spain. If it's aircon your wife wants, then that's a different matter, but you only mentioned the hair straighteners.

How many times a year do you cruise for 3 days without visiting a town?
£3-15k will buy an aweful lot of hairdresser appointments, surely?
And then you get two free hours in the chandlery.

Agree £15K is OTT.

The gensets are about £3/4K and with all the bits a pieces + silencer etc and fitting costs lifts the 'fiited' price to say double that. But then of course you have power for the oven, hot water, battery charger and all manner of hair stuffs. Even the small modern jobs will run an ac unit these days as can accept the overload for the brief start up load.

Unbelievably my Mrs along with another 11 partners of a gang of Club members have agreed to come to Greece on a Flotilla this year, of course they have electric on board we said !!!!! They are still trawling the net for a nice pair of high heeled Musto's with matching hand bag.

Hi

I got my honda genny under £100, NEW. Quiet as heck, just purrs, consumption is minimal. (aldi of all places do these also, see their website)...Plus I have a leasure battery which is boosted from the alternator and trickled via my solar panels....

personally, if my missus gave me that ultimatum reckon Id be cruising alone, and that'd teach her! Joking...(a bit anyway)

BUT....BUT ... Go for GAS CARTRIDGE POWERED hair products, ie: NO leccy needed,

happy boating

Thanks for the info, we have not needed aircon yet, as at a mooring we get a breeze blowing through, and the marina seems cooler than the house.

See above and thanks for the advice, and looking forward to 240V!!!!!
