Wife says its ether 240V, or she won’t come cruising.

Sellotape and a towel instead of straightners and hair dryer! Much cheaper. Sellotape also useful in bad cases of whinging..........or for wrapping Valentines pressie!

Wife says its ether 240V, or she won’t come cruising.

Help……………………………….

I am in a dilemma, I have shore power that supplies 240V when alongside, but nada when cruising and anchor hopping.
The Mrs, apparently, wont go more that 3 day without using her GHD hair straighteners.
I have looked at a diesel inboard gen set but the 15K price tag scared me off ( I am Scottish eh ).
I was thinking of in inverter, but would I need to increase my alternator size ? and battery bank ?, or would a cheep and nasty petrol generator do a job.

Thanks in advance for any help or tips.

Petrol portable generator My SD had the same problem with my mother for the hair dryer. £500 on eBay works a treat

You could offer to pay for a nice new, SHORT HAIR, cut. My wife has lovely short hair that she just leaves to dry naturally after she has washed it. Her hair always looks lovely, with natural waves. She's standing behind me now and I can see her reflection in my screen. Yes she is lovely, that's for sure.

I would think the right combination of battery capacity and an inverter would work out the cheapest and most reliable.

We have one particular friend who likes to bring his wife on some of our week long Barrier Reef trips, we have to take the generator because she uses so much power and get this, she says she can't sleep at night without the air conditioner running, so the gen set runs at full tilt about 5 hours a night. Hubby gets up and maintains the fuel level in the small tank at all hours.

As it's also charging the 8 batteries on board it saves running the engines during the day.

I'm with fireball and his missus!
I have a really silly but useful hat that I hardly ever take off on the boat, so even if my hair were not naturally ramrod straight, heat-treating it wouldn't make a difference. Even a very nice hat would be a lot cheaper than a generator, easier to store, environmentally friendlier etc.
And most women are fairly au naturel when they're in bed, and don't suddenly become unattractive to their partners when they're like that - so why should artificial beauty aids be so important in a family/holiday situation? If you're cruising and anchor-hopping, not in a crowded marina (with shore power), whom is she trying to please or impress with her appearance? It seems a very strange thing on which to base one's self-esteem or feeling of comfort.
It strikes me that the problem is not the facilities on the boat, but the things Mrs Joe feels valued for. Mr FG likes me to be on the boat with him because I can steer it and cook on it, and because I enjoy myself being there and with him, not because he wouldn't have anything pretty to look at if I wasn't there. I certainly don't see my job as sitting around looking attractive, either on the boat or off it.

i have it on good authority that Boots Rechargable Straightners are the only thing coming close to GHDs.

It works for me, ten minutes after mooring on the pontoon on Newcastle Quayside, we're stood in a trendy boozer next to footballers and all that lot, one of us looking perfectly groomed and gorgeous, and me still bald as a badgers......! :)

Good luck,

Andy

Reminds me of a couple of years ago:

Me to teenage daughter - "The secret of happy boating is planning"

Reply - "No dad, the secret of happy boating is shore power"
