hi, looking for an opinion really...

i want to use a sealant to fix my windows in place, semi structural, the glass will be held in by the trims.

the windows are sealed units (double glazed) and are the same thickness as the cabin sides that form the frames.

the trims are screwed onto the cabin sides and overlapp the glass/frame joint.

what i'm after is a mastic type sealant that will remain flexible whilst having some adhesive qualities.

what should i use?
where do i get it?

cheers, steve.

Hello chap.

Dont use polyurethane, if you ever need to remove it will rip the wood to bits, previous owner of mine left me with this.

Dont use polysulphide as it does not stick at all of plastic, you may be ok with glass though, but I think not.

This year I have leak free windows for the first time, what did I use? Linseed oil putty. Cheap too. Its not structural of course, but easy to use and easy to replace.

I use glazing mastic made by Laybond . Most builders yards will do it .
I sealed a forumites seamaster window with it a few months ago , maybe he can tell you if its still sealed .

Hi Ben,

what i need is something simmilar to what the guys use when "glueing" the sheets of glass... but theirs is at 195 degs C!

i'm not aufait with the grades/types of sika, so was looking for something that was sticky but remained "spongey"

anyway that aside... how the devil are you, and what are you working on at the moment?

I was down at deacons last week doing DS, with Mendez Marine, what a great place. and a very nice cruiser in the shed.

there's also a boat down there i was meaning to have a look at but unfortunately didn't get round to it.

must make the effort to get down one weekend for a proper look round.

steve.

I used an automotive type of sikaflex that was called 'Bus and Rail Glazing adhesive sealant' (might be grade 292 or something)

Try a local truck supplier for stuff like that. It was less than half the price of the 'marine' one. Two years on, and the windows it did dont leak. All the other do though, must get round to doing them before winter!

I'm good.

Dont ask what I'm working on...its a long story.

Lots of interesting boats at that end of the river, Deacons and above, you should have a wander round the foukes place between the railway and motorway bridges, lots of interesting boats in there.

They ruined the Jolly Sailor though, dreadfull now, Ship still good and good food (big portions!).
