I often wonder that myself, but I suppose the ultimmate reason is escapism, the second you step onto a boat, any boat, the mundane world disappears and suddenly becomes slightly magical again. No amount of rain, spray, queasiness,cold or dark ever dampens or dims that magic glow. Hope that helps.
