Before I start perhaps I should say that I like boats of (almost) all types, including those that manage without sails. I even made my living skippering a nice working 80 footer once, engine room telegraf and all. Anyway I thought I'd run this past you to see what you think,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

We were in Limehouse Basin last week, we being three old men in individual Vertues, chatting, drinking and watching the considerable skills of the narrowboaters as the sun went down.
In the next berth a large(ish) motor cruiser ( three floors, fly bridge, patio doors...) populated by two couples in their thirties drowned the noise of their own conversation by running their twin diesels at well over half throttle, out of gear for about half an hour,,,,,,,,,,,,,
There was much silent relief when they turned them off, and a loud protest when they turned them on again... along the lines of "Good grief man, will you keep the noise down?!"
Response was "What noise? Are you serious? This is a Marina, people come here to run their engines.".
Anyone else find that odd?

Glazed bores, us or them?

Agree Marinas are not places for running engines at half throttle can't see the point cos they must have had
shore power or genny so it could'nt have been a battery charging thing. I have two friends, liveaboards
in Limehouse don't suppose they where amused either.

Try this one :- recite this story

"A mate of mine ran his engines in the marina last year and it cost him a fortune, you se the problem is that the idler gear is not under load and it resonates. Not a probelm for a while but it the heat caused the grease in the bearing to go runny and hence the bearing seized up. Now not a problem you may say but when it seazed it broke the main drive shaft into the bottom of the engine and cracked the Cylinder block. That cost him £9,000 for a new bottom engine."

Unless he has a degree in engineering and knows better, he should be scared stiff and turn 'em off like a shot. !!!

Half the attraction of being on the water is the glorious silence when you shut down and listen to the water lapping on the hull...

And the weather for the weekend is...............

Ah, but choose a real boat with wooden spars and fiber running rigging,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, then the silence wil only be interupted by the hicough and whine of the jet skii.
A good motor boat will sound like distant thunder, very distant . Fourty liters of slow revving diesel pushing a load can be quite soothing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
