Why would a deck hand on a tug do this?

heading back from watching the clipper race i heard a horn behind me, a tug was following around a 25 footer that was in the 6 K limit, the 25 footer appeared to move over a tad although there was ample room either side and water was 9M deep.

As the tug passed the deck hand proceeded to take around a dozen camera shots at the craft, and the man at the helm of the 25 footer seemed oblivious, or was probably doing the 'if i dont look then they cant see me' thing that can happen on the roads if you cut someone up by mistake.

Just seemed strange to take so many pics when he appeared to do nothing wrong, and even if he did, no action can be taken...unless he just liked the boat:confused:

Can be reported to Southampton VTS, if any port regulations infringed.

If the 25 ft boat was overtaken by the tug, then clearly not a speed limit issue ( unless it was travellling too slowly !). Unfortunately, my experience of commercial fishing boats and tugs does not reassure me that their crew are aware of things like the collision regs, or maybe they believe they do not apply when coming across pleaasure craft ( sounds like a Scuttlebutt topic!)

Not long ago there was a thread on here wherein tug enthusiasts posted pictures of their favourite tugs.

Maybe there is an equivelent forum for tug operators, where they post pictures of their favourite yachts. :D

Was the 25er in the fairway? There is a byelaw about small vessels not obstructing vessels that can only use the fairway. Maybe that's what the tug was getting het up about.

Cheers

If the tug was restricted to the 9m channel that is a chuffin' big tug. Perhaps the smaller boat should comment back re overtaking boat to keep clear etc?

I think the tug crew's private pleasure boat enthusiasm theory is the winner:-)

If its in the speed limit, you are right up by Hythe and the rivers? HM is often up there and ready to chastise people, but I cant think the tug staff bother.
How many blasts from the tug?

i think he sounded his horn about 3 times, i was in front of both of them by about 50m when i pulled to one side to see what was going on. Maybe the tug opperator was a boat spotter instead of a train spotter:D

This was the point it started while heading toward the Itchen bridge, once they passed i followed them for a bit just watching the picture taking before heading back out.

Just checked the link, it may zoom in to far but i dropped a green arrow at the spot where the treasure is burried :)

Several skippers of these tugboats have a complete disregard for speed limits and seamanship
Year after year they past the pontoons at Southampton boat show at maximum speed discomforting ,endangering visitor and causing unessarary damage to boat moored on the pontoons. I am sure they do this on purpose. The harbourmaster should take these skippers to task,Rant over

Better name for them kippers!

2 long one short I wish to overtake to starboard?

Very possible, wished i had paid more attention, im sure the gap between blasts was too short. However he past to his left, so i doubt that was the sounding and apart from myself there were no other vessels coming or going.

He must just be a sprts cruise anorak:D
