Bramblemet post was showing 5mtrs height of tide
Sotonmet was showing 5.07mtrs.
Looking out the window, it seemed to be a 5mtr tide to me.
Calshot prediction 4.2
QHM prediction 4.5mtr with 75% of Springs whatever that means
Barometer 1003
No big SW wind

So why was the tide so high?

Blame Greta Thunberg!

More accurately, low barometric pressure ‘sucks’ the sea up and results in higher tides. Prolonged storms can push huge volumes of water up against the coast resulting in a ’storm surge’ which flooded the east coast in, what was it, 1953?

Low pressure: its been around 980mb over the weekend and the predicted 4.7 at Chi has been coming p to 5.0 or 5.1. If there's a strong westerly or south westerly behind it as there was yesterday then it can push it up a lot further than that. The devastating N Sea surge of 53 which killed so many people was a lethal combinaton of a very strong northerly wind and a high tide up against sea defences that had had little attention since before the war. It's happened several times since, but the sea defences that were strengthened and raised following the loss of life in 53 have held so far.

During the Hurricane of 89 the water at Dell Quay at the height of the storm at about 3.00am, about the time of predicted LW, was still well above the predicted HW mark. Had it come through at HW we could well have seen another N Sea disaster on the S Coast as it could have overwhelmed most of the Manhood Peninsular. Parts of Chichester are barely a Metre above MHWS, and the sea defences are only good for 6m above LAT. Its been up to 5.7m twice in recent years! A lot of the land round Chichester harbour is below the HW mark behind the sea defences
