Why the Welly Centaur will be better and safer than a donkey Centaur

Thanks for that Jumbleduck, I'll read and dream. I won't evangelise here - but lordy, how cool is electric power? :)

your fame has spread and I was emailed pictures of your excellent treatise on powering your Sabre 27 with a 9.9hp engine

as you said right at the top of the piece the outboard was the cheaper option at the time <<snip>>

dylan.winter@virgin.net

T'wasn't me with a Sabre. My Tohatsu originally powered my Listang T24, which weighs little more than your duck punt. Slung on the back of the Centaur it was adequate when the wind was too light to sail, but barely so if I had to deal with a channel chop or headwind.

My total bill for used motor, new shaft, couplings, prop etc was under £2000.

sorry

the bloke with the sabre had such a similar story to tell

he put a 9.8 on his Sabre

stuck with it for several years before buying an inboard

if I can track him down I will put his words up on the web some-where

I have sent an email to the sabre association

You did read the article and my mail, and the replies to this thread, right?

I emailed you the article. The Sabre is owned by Ken Endean. He also writes for PBO/YM so should not be too hard to track down. He has not swapped his outboard back again for an inboard, (unless in the last month since I last saw the boat) however I think he may be on his second outboard now since the original conversion.

Please don't post the article I sent you as is on the web...it's part of the association handbook you get as a member of the Class association, one of the main reasons for joining. The content is not even on the association website. Of course, if you speak to Ken directly and he gives you permission, that's a different thing.

Thanks

I did read it this morning

and looked at the pictures with the cut out stern

that was where I got the 1.25 litres an hour at four knots

I am clearly conflating two narratives

sorry about that

D

PS - just spoke to Ken

He is still using the 9.8 on his sabre

he says that the 10 hp should be able to push the centaur along okay

I am re-assured regarding his fuel consumption figures

If by "cool" you mean lacking in energy
Diesel and petrol both have an energy density of about 46 mega-Joules per kg. A lead acid battery has an energy density of about 0.17 mega-Joules per kg. In other words to store the energy available from just one litre of fuel would require a 270kg battery!

We'll just have to wait for the price of lighter batteries to drop. The Li-ion pack in a Tesla Roadster weighs 500kg, so half of one of them would take the place of Dylan's Volvo and give a very adequate range. Pity the pack costs fifty grand, really. And only lasts seven years.

Jolly good. I remember when we left from inside him on the above photo, he went out almost sideways!

No, I'm under no delusion regarding the practical usability of batteries as fuel - in the terms that most modern yachtsmen regard and rely on their auxiliary, electricity isn't an option.

Just the same, if the sailor enjoys the leisure-time & flexibility of schedule not to have to be at any certain place by any certain hour, I believe that sailing 97% of the miles, then running an electric motor in those areas too constricted for sailing, would make for a very traditionally peaceful and fulfilling experience. Partly because of the silent simplicity of a non-oily power-system - (which either runs, or more often, doesn't), but mainly because having to think almost exclusively in sailing terms is more challenging - and rewarding.

A matter for a different thread, though.

And just think of the opportunities for cheating while racing!

Don't know if it has been suggested or cropped up on another thread but the Centaur below may fit into the budget:-

Not sure I am on board with the outboard in a well which may render the boat unsaleable after you have finished with it but a bit of spit and polish might result in a gem! You never know the inboard might also be sweet!
You have probably seen the one in the link but you never know.

thanks Rob

I had not spotted the open to any offers

might be worth a quick look

I have emailed them

thanks

Oh, I had thought of that...except I don't race...but the fun of silently sailing past much faster boats in very calm conditions, does sound amusing! ;)

If my outboard was silent I'd probably use it more, not less. The best part of the day is when I press that black button and kill it!
