Why Straight Men Wear Earrings!

A man is at work one day when he notices that his co-worker is wearing an earring. The man knows his co-worker to be a normally conservative fellow, and is curious about his sudden change in "fashion sense."
He walks up to his co-worker and says, "I didn't know you were into earrings."
"Don't make such a big deal, it's only an earring," the co-worker replies sheepishly.
His friend falls silent for a few minutes, but then his curiosity prods him to say, "So, how long have you been wearing one?"
"Ever since my wife found it in my truck!"

Folkestone fishermen all wore earrings well before the 40s & 50s - not, I believe for the same reason.

Thought a swallow tattoo between thumb and forefinger showed you were round the Horn under sail?

The truth of matter is that sailors would have an earing , just the one made of gold .
It was used to cover the cost of his burial at sea .
Similar, but I was told it was to pay the ferry man across the Styx..?

Think about it - would you keep a rotting corpse onboard even if he hadn’t paid? The fish are going to get fed one way or the other...

Sailed with a guy from a dutch island, where all the seafarers had a gold earring. When I asked him why, he said it was so he always had currency to pay for passage to the afterlife, no means of payment would mean an eternity in limbo.

More fool them for not investing in a Pure Cremation Plan. :)
Cremations at sea calls to mind the story of the Eskimo who burnt parts of his boat to keep warm but overdid it. Thus you cannot have your kayak and heat it...

(I should have owned up that that story, properly elaborated to include 3 guys called Ab, Abdul and Abdullah and so forth, came from Frank Muir and Denis Norden of the much missed BBC radio programme "My Word". And the punch line was in fact the title of a book, which I do not have, of their stories which were a feature of that programme.)
