Why is there a 1 cm hole in the left side of my bow ?

Everybody suggests anchor locker drain but surely its the drain for the chain locker ? Is that not where the anchor chain stows ?

If so the fact that water will tend to enter will mean that the chain in the bottom will always have water swilling around it and rust quickly

Id make a false loose bottom to fit a few inches above the drain hole to keep the chain out of the water.

VicS,

please for the sake of all that's holy don't tell me you use all chain on a Sea Wych ?!

The anchor rode I use has 4 metres of 1/4" chain then 30 metres of 14mm nylon 3 strand; when recovering the anchor I try to flake down the warp ready for deploying next time.

I do see Bens' pic of the hole from the outside shows a rust type stain; if that area isn't used for carrying the anchor I'd urgently suggest a look at the forestay, pulpit stemhead & cleat fastenings, but especially the forestay, no joking !

Be careful that nothing blocks the hole as if that locker fills up you will have a hell of a weight right up forward. It will then start coming into the boat. It is a quite common tale of new boats being delivered with fiberglass swarf in the chain locker and blocking the drain. I had a friend who delivered a large new swan which had a chain locker which drained into the bilge (worst of both worlds). The drain blocked and the bulkhead gave way.

Yes all chain as recommended, and supplied, by John Sadler. 15lb CQR type anchor as well

People swinging about all over a crowed anchorage on a few inches of chain and miles and miles of string are a PITA

Vic,

I'm more fussy about where I anchor ! :)

With all due respect, the Sea Wytch needs help not hindrance ?

I am no racing nut BTW !

Also, it may be my memory - usually is - but who's John Sadler - and what was he on ?! Met David & Martin...

The SeaWych only trims properly with 15 fathoms of chain in the locker. If rope is used additional ballast is needed to restore the boat to its proper trim.
