Now it's weightism..
Went to get the haul out rates and they charge by the tonne. Does not matter what size it is. The crane lifts up to 50 tonnes and every tonne you weigh costs more. Same crane, same time, same ammount of people.
If they don't get you one wy they get you another.
I have a tonne of fuel aboard. don't mind letting the water out but dam if I am going too dump the fuel.

True but then the girl was charming. Also prices are half price in January and she booked me in on a Saturday meaning I get an extra day free. This means the cost is similar to lifting a matchbox out in summer.

Now I could go on about why they charge double in summer to winter for the same weight boat

I get cheesed off when I arrive as a singlehander and am charged the same amount as a family of four who are producing oodles of waste, consuming billions of units of leccy on their laptops and Wii and spending all their time in the showers trying to pretend they are having a bath.

Its called being sensitive to your market. Not a lot of demand in the winter so reduce the prices and increase sales. Lots of demand in the summer so prices rise when demand rises. Higher prices also controls demand and keeps it within capacity.

Basic rules of running a seasonal business.

We go even further in our club by offering free storage ashore for the dead 3 months in the middle of winter when demand on car parking is limited. As soon as the warm weather comes the price rises and the time ashore is limited. Called demand management.

Once you get away from civilisation and start anchoring in those lovely little bays you will forget all about 21st century problems and just rant about how the price of beer rises as it gets warmer (the weather that is, not the beer).

I know exactly what you mean.
With four of us aboard we spend our lives taking single hander lines and helping them in as they run round the deck like a headless chicken.
Then we go for a shower and find that one of us have to wait due to some single hander spending forever in there as he has not had a shower for 30 years.
We also need 3 laptops so I can answer your e mail and slow the internet down for you.
Then we invite you on our boat to drink our drink and eat our food because you have run out of bars of chocolate. So our waste is half yours and the electricity is to entertain and feed you.

Rather like airlines charge double - and more - for the same people during school holidays.

Have you been living in a nuclear shelter all your life!!!

Air lines don't charge double in school holidays... they discount it the rest of the year... thought everyone knew that:D:D

Proper Singlehanders do not eat chocolate - they eat Corned Beef. However, I am sure many will be along soon to agree with you; especially the headless chicken bit.

Back to the question: Why is the marine industry obsessed with size?
Many years ago I got to know a lovely young wench who worked in a marina office.
I asked her the same question. We got hitched three weeks later :D

Now that's a seriously expensive marina visit. Bet even Saltern's is cheap compared to that :p
