I have just found an old Thomas Foulkes catalogue from 1982.Some of the price comparisons are interesting:~
Horseshoe lifebuoy set, '82 £43.45 '03 £28.90
Auto lifejacket '82 £38.24 '03 £39.90
Seavoice Vhf '82 £256.50 Nasa '03 £239.00
I'm definitely going to save up for one of these~
The latest low cost Satellite Navigator, allows up to 16 fixes per day and is only the size of a suitcase, a snip at £1700

In the days of Transat ..... before GPS .... a Magnavox Satnav was restricted sale to Western National Companies only !!!! A snip at over 8000 quid! No routes, no waypoints etc. Size of your average 14" TV ....... best available !!

Boy it was crap !!!! You had to wait for a transit of a sat. to get a fix. THe hips in my fleet that had it - gas ships for safety - the area they sailed, China Sea - was the worst coverage area !!!!! We still used the E/S and traditional methods to naviagate !!! THe Company also imposed such strict use on the machine as well ..... we had to use it in conjunction with LORAN and DECCA where available etc. etc. I hated the thing !! BUt in fact it was better than its predecessor ...... which was the size of a standard fridge and had a print output ..... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO SCREEN !!!! All instructions were input blind as there was no screen, only the printer !!

Nigel ...
Bilge Keelers get up further ! I only came - cos they said there was FREE Guinness !

Proper seacocks - ie Blakes are Bronze and only made in small quantities; Gate valves are BRASS and made in huge quantities for the plumbing market(and should NEVER be used on boats!)
Instead of Blakes you can use a Bronze skin fitting with a Bronze Ball valve for about ¼ the price of a Blakes - and just as good.

I'd rather be sailing... :-) /forums/images/icons/smile.gif
